Voice professor releases album featuring black composers
Assistant Professor of Voice Carl DuPont had the new album, “The Reaction,” released by Albany Records. It features songs by black composers, most of whom have never been recorded.

University employees, students attend energy summit
UNC Charlotte staff, faculty and students recently participated in the seventh annual Appalachian Energy Summit, hosted by Appalachian State University. The summit is a gathering of energy and sustainability leaders from higher education and other industries to exchange ideas for improving campus performance in energy, buildings, waste, transport, buildings and curriculum.
Faculty & Friends series to open with Nina Simone tribute
The Department of Music’s Faculty & Friends Concert Series will open Tuesday, Aug.28, with “Revolution & Revival,” a tribute to Nina Simone. This event, which will feature performances by A Sign of the Times jazz band and the Madison Park String Quartet, is scheduled for 7:30 p.m. in the Rowe Recital Hall.
Theatre alumna wins career achievement award
Department of Theatre alumna Caridad Svich recently received the 2018 Ellen Stewart Award for Career Achievement in Professional Theatre by the Association for Theatre in Higher Education (ATHE). The honor is given annually to recognize superlative contributions to the field of theatre.
‘User Agreement’ to premiere at Bechtler Museum
The world premiere of “User Agreement,” conceived by faculty and students in the College of Arts + Architecture, is set for Monday, Aug. 20, at the Bechtler Museum of Modern Art.
Thompson named chair of Art & Art History
Lydia Thompson is the new chair of the Department of Art & Art History in the College of Arts + Architecture.
Music Department’s annual piano sale set
During the past academic year, the University’s Department of Music has had access to first-class standard and digital pianos through an association with the Rockley Family Foundation.
To perpetuate this program, these instruments, along with those provided other institutions, will be sold.
Individuals can make an appointment to attend a “pre-sale” Thursday through Saturday, Aug. 2-4, by calling 704-687-1999.
The final sale will be 2 to 5 p.m., Aug. 4, at Robinson Hall for the Performing Arts; no appointment is required for the final sale.
Justice named director of galleries
Adam Justice recently joined the College of Arts + Architecture as director galleries. In this role, he will oversee the artistic operations of gallery spaces in Storrs and Rowe Arts buildings and the Projective Eye Gallery at UNC Charlotte Center City.
Play directed by theatre professor earns Chicago accolades
A Chicago production of Cordelia Lynn’s play “Lela & Co.,” directed by Associate Professor of Theatre Robin Witt, has received three Joseph Jefferson (Jeff) Awards honoring non-Equity Chicago theatre.
The production received six Jeff Award nominations and won in the categories of Best Director (Play), Best Actor (Play) and Best Production (Play).
