Charlotte 49ers senior linebacker Juwan Foggie has been nominated for the 2018 Allstate AFCA Good Works Team and named to the Wuerffel Trophy Watch List.

The Allstate AFCA Good Works Team is comprised of college football student-athletes and one honorary head coach who make outstanding contributions in the areas of volunteerism and civic involvement. These individuals embody the true spirit of teamwork and giving back through commendable acts of kindness.

Charlotte 49ers junior softball star Meredith Harris is among 14 student-athletes who received the Conference USA Spring Spirit of Service Award. This honor is designed to recognize the league’s student-athletes based upon significant community service, good academic standing and participation in their elected sport. 

The Spirit of Service award is presented three times throughout the season. These most recent honorees represent spring sports: baseball, golf, softball, tennis and outdoor track and field.

Counseling master’s student Amie Begg has received a national fellowship to support her education and facilitate her addictions counseling service to underserved minority youth.

The National Board for Certified Counselors (NBCC) Minority Fellowship Program-Addictions Counselors (MFP-AC) is awarded annually. The program’s goal is to reduce health disparities and improve behavioral health care outcomes for diverse populations by increasing the available number of culturally competent behavioral health professionals.

Devin Collins recently spent a week in Jamaica, where he worked with entrepreneurs as part of a U.S. State Department-sponsored visit, leading multiple workshops, customer discovery competitions and roundtable discussions at the U.S. embassy.

In his talks, he provided insight into best practices related to startup ventures and the role of universities in driving and developing job creation through innovation among other topics related to entrepreneurism.

National Volunteer Week is April 16-20 and UNC Charlotte employees have numerous opportunities to join colleagues in a variety of organized service opportunities throughout the week.

There is a lot of science going on in North Carolina, and on April 1, the state begins the 2018 N.C. Science Festival, a statewide public “celebration of science,” featuring almost 700 events, throughout the entire month.
Now in its seventh year of participation, UNC Charlotte is again part of the N.C. Science Festival’s mind-expanding activities.

A summer camp designed by the Cato College of Education is providing a free, literacy-rich experience for dozens of east Charlotte elementary students while helping researchers uncover best practices for programs of the future.

“The Story of the Charlotte Girl” is one of opportunities and resources, and it is the focus of a nearly yearlong initiative of UNC Charlotte’s Women + Girls Research Alliance.

Few Charlotteans probably realize that the Queen City housed a World War I training camp. Located just outside Uptown Charlotte, near Wilkinson Boulevard and Tuckaseegee Road, is Camp Greene. Opened originally in September 1917, Camp Greene was named for the Revolutionary War hero Nathanael Greene.

For humanitarian contributions to the field of industrial-organizational psychology, UNC Charlotte professor Steven Rogelberg was named the inaugural recipient of the Society of Industrial and Organizational Psychology Humanitarian Award.
