Sharing the loss of Larry Mellichamp

Thomas Lawrence Mellichamp ’70, former director of the UNC Charlotte Botanical Gardens, died Sept. 12.

A professor emeritus in the Biology Department, Mellichamp retired in 2014 after nearly four decades directing the development of the University’s Botanical Gardens. He completed a bachelor’s degree in biological sciences from the University and went on to earn a doctorate in botany from the University of Michigan before returning to join the Charlotte faculty in 1976.

Haines named director of continuing education

Asher Haines recently joined the University as director of continuing education. Prior to UNC Charlotte, he oversaw communications, training and development and change management for Walmart’s Global Shared Services Center in Charlotte. Haines also served as campus president of the Art Institute of Charlotte, associate vice chancellor of operations for Keiser University and senior territory vice president for University of Phoenix.

Register for Camps on Campus

UNC Charlotte’s Camps on Campus offers children and young people the opportunity to join scientists, researchers, educators, writers and actors in the creative atmosphere of a college campus. Camp offerings this year include robotics, space exploration, Minecraft and smart art. More information about this year’s program can be found on the Camps on Campus website.

Respiratory therapy grads to present at international convention

Four recent UNC Charlotte graduates have been invited to present at the American Association for Respiratory Care international convention.

The respiratory therapy majors, Sheila Ball (’15), Holly Harron (’15), Jamie Lemmon (’15) and Andrew Miller (’14), were selected based upon their final projects completed as part of a capstone course.
