Amy Wartham, director of corporate and custom training, recently received the Governor’s Award for Excellence in the category of human relations. This is the highest honor a state employee can receive for dedicated service to the state of North Carolina and its residents.

Retired student media adviser, professor, advocate, mentor Wayne Maikranz leaves lasting story
Wayne Joseph Maikranz, known to many as a mentor, student advocate and valued colleague, died Sept. 27 at age 63. He served 34 years with UNC Charlotte as Student Niner Media director and adviser, as well as a lecturer in the Department of Communication Studies prior to his retirement in 2019.

Understanding institutional neutrality
In July 2023, a new law went into effect in North Carolina requiring UNC System institutions to remain neutral on any political controversies.
As a public university, UNC Charlotte respects and adheres to all state laws and mandates by the UNC System. UNC Charlotte also is committed to sustaining a campus environment that embraces different perspectives and fosters respectful dialogue while ensuring that all members of the University community are treated with respect, fairness and dignity.

Asha Ellison appointed director of research translation and engagement
Asha Ellison has been named director of research translation and engagement for the UNC Charlotte Urban Institute, part of urbanCORE, a unit within the Division of Academic Affairs. Her official start date was Monday, Sept. 18.
