Chris McDaniel has a message for all UNC Charlotte students interested in becoming an engineer. He wants them to join Engage ME!, where they will get the mentoring and support to thrive in their future career.

Two UNC Charlotte students, originally from Cuba, are helping to keep their father’s dream alive, and their story was featured recently on Charlotte Agenda.Manny Perez, a junior finance major, and his sister, Ana, who is studying political science, help their mother to operate Havana Carolina, a restaurant in Concord.The sibling undergraduates arrived in the United States from Cuba in 2015 with their parents Idael Pérez Maldonado and Dania Ochoa Hernandez.

During the annual Three Minute Thesis (3MT) competition, graduate students have to summarize extensive and complex research or scholarship into a brief, compelling presentation that anyone can understand—in three minutes.This year’s event will be at 4 p.m., Friday, Nov. 15, in Atkins Library, Halton Reading Room. Attendees will be able to vote for their favorite presenters alongside the panel of judges.

Transfer students are an important segment of the University’s undergraduate population. UNC Charlotte admits the highest number of transfer students in the entire UNC System. This past year, about 4,000 transfer students enrolled at UNC Charlotte and arrived on campus from community colleges and other institutions across the state and nation.

Charlotte Inno announced its inaugural list of Under 25 innovators, and four of the nine honorees have strong ties to UNC Charlotte.

Three faculty members in the College of Arts + Architecture are among the winners of the inaugural “Celebrate Charlotte Arts” grants given by the Knight Foundation. Twelve grants, totaling $200,000, are designated to “fund art that captures the spirit of Charlotte.”Assistant Professor of Theatre CarlosAlexis Cruz and his urban circus project, Nouveau Sud, will receive $25,000 for “La Bestia,” a contemporary circus take on the Central American immigrant journey to the United States.

The economy of the United States and North Carolina, as of July 2019, is now experiencing the longest economic expansion since 1854. While at a modest rate, the national and state economies do continue to grow, and this consistent, decade-long expansion is significant, UNC Charlotte professor and economist John Connaughton said.

A small group of children walk out of the Atrium Health University City hospital cafeteria and head directly to the crafts table. Volunteer students from UNC Charlotte’s School of Social Work greet them with smiling faces and art supplies in hand. A loud buzz fills the lobby as only the voices of young kids can do, while little hands craft get well soon cards for hospital patients.

A team of architecture students, led by School of Architecture faculty members Chris Jarrett and Peter Wong, has received an Honorable Mention in the 2019 Timber in the City: Urban Habitats Competition presented by the Association of Collegiate Schools of Architecture (ACSA).
