UNC Charlotte students win national college bass fishing title

Andrew Helms and Jake Whitaker recently teamed to win the 2014 Carhartt Bassmaster College Series National Championship held at Chatuge Reservoir in Georgia.

Helms, a junior marketing major from Monroe, and Whitaker, a senior civil engineering major from Fairview, caught 15 fish during the three-day team event. Their total catch weight of 38 pounds and 9 ounces topped the second-place finishers by 8 ounces.

MRC’s Josh Burford named Best LGBT Leader

The publication QNotes recently named Josh Burford, assistant director for sexual and gender diversity in the Multicultural Resource Center, Charlotte’s Best LGBT Leader.
Burford’s selection resulted from ballots cast by QNotes readers earlier this year. UNC Charlotte senior Lee Ziglar was voted Best Young Adult Leader, too. According to its website, QNotes is an “LGBT arts, entertainment and news publication” based in Charlotte.
“I’m honored to be selected for this award, and I hope to continue to work hard on behalf of the local LGBTQ community,” said Burford.

Collegiate Recovery Community receives $2,500 from fundraiser

Steve Donai, a representative from Heroes in Recovery, recently presented a $2,500 check to support the University’s Collegiate Recovery Community. The funding was generated through proceeds from the inaugural Heroes in Recovery 6K trail race/walk held in June in Reedy Creek Park.
Debbie Insley, director of the Center for Wellness Promotion, and Carol Rose, CRC marketing specialist, accepted the donation.

Student Affairs Division responds to displaced students

A weekend fire at an off-campus apartment complex resulted in no injuries, although some UNC Charlotte students are being displaced for repairs to their apartments. Departments within the Division for Student Affairs responded immediately, offering the displaced students optional housing on campus, counseling services and contacts with the American Red Cross. One office is coordinating collection of temporary supplies.

Local artist to display nightlife paintings in Student Union

Works by local artist Paul Keysar will be displayed Monday, July 7, through Thursday, July 24, in the Student Union Gallery.
“While the City Sleeps: Night Paintings” features a group of landscape paintings of Concord, Charlotte and other local towns at night.
“As an artist, I am continually observing life around me,” Keysar explained. “I am fascinated by the effects of light, atmosphere, and weather. My goal is to show the beauty of the land and man’s dependence on it.”

Explore the great outdoors through Venture trips

Whether looking for a walk in the woods or some fun on a lake, UNC Charlotte’s Venture outdoor education program has the right summer trip. Led by experienced outdoor facilitators, Venture trips are open to UNC Charlotte students, faculty, staff and the general public.
All trips require a mandatory pre-trip meeting to review the itinerary, safety precautions and for participants to meet their companions.  Typically, all equipment and transportation are provided by Venture.

Students finish among tops at national billiard, table tennis tournaments

UNC Charlotte students demonstrated their skills at the annual Association of College Unions International billiard and table tennis tournaments.
“Our students represented UNC Charlotte with excellence in competition and sportsmanship,” said James Contratto, assistant director of student activities for weekend programs.
In the men’s 9-ball billiards competition, UNC Charlotte’s David Anderson took second place among a field of 50 players.

Governor provides funding for programs aimed at student recovery

Gov. Pat McCrory recently lauded UNC Charlotte’s Collegiate Recovery Community for efforts to address student recovery, underage drinking and substance abuse.
The University was named one of six UNC system campuses to participate in a pilot program with a goal to further deter substance abuse and underage drinking. UNC Charlotte will join ECU, UNC Chapel Hill, North Carolina A&T, UNC Wilmington and UNC Greensboro in the new program. Each campus will receive $125,000 to aid education, prevention and recovery efforts.

Student Union gallery displaying alumna’s work

“Let Your Lines Lead You” is a display featuring work by UNC Charlotte alumna Suzy Hannon. It explores the movement of lines in emotions, and it will be displayed Tuesday, June 10, through Tuesday, July 1, in the Student Union Art Gallery.
A public reception for the exhibit will be at 5 p.m., Wednesday, June 25, in the gallery.
The display features a group of large-scale figures hung to form a labyrinth to convey the universal human emotions of joy, apathy, grief and confidence.

Volunteers needed for Heroes in Recovery 6K

Organizers of the inaugural Heroes in Recovery 6K Trail Run/Walk, which will benefit the University’s Collegiate Recovery Community, are seeking volunteers to assist with the event, scheduled for Saturday, June 21.
Volunteers would help with event set up/tear down, registration, food set up, parking and water stations. Each volunteer will receive a Heroes in Recovery T-shirt at check-in. To assist, email the volunteer coordinator at heroesinrecovery@frnmail.com.
