Retired faculty member creates fund to support nursing research

Ann Mabe Newman ’78 dedicated much of her 34-year teaching career to nursing research. Now in retirement, her devotion to that effort and to the School of Nursing continues through a $25,000 gift established in her name.The Ann Mabe Newman Research Support Fund will help faculty members write grants. It is a significant step in support of a long-term goal to establish a Ph.D. program in nursing.During her 30 years as an associate professor, Newman participated in grant writing and knows the difficulties involved.

Faculty members sought for Kids Fest that educates, engages young minds

UNC Charlotte archaeologist Sara Juengst spends her summers working in South America. So by the fall, she’s ready to engage with the Charlotte community and some of its youngest residents. She finds that audience at Kids Fest, a free interactive educational event designed for children age 10 and under and their families.University City Partners, a nonprofit organization that helps drive development in the University City area, created Kids Fest to expand the minds of children and parents in the Charlotte region.

UNC Charlotte’s connection to the city of Charlotte’s rich history and vast community resources are helping new faculty and senior staff engage with the Queen City.  Developed in response to feedback from new employees seeking a deeper connection to the city, Community Engagement Orientation is held annually in August and is designed to introduce University newcomers of less than a year to the area  while underscoring its symbiotic relationship with UNC Charlotte.

Alumna’s nursing scholarship to benefit ‘underdog’ students

UNC Charlotte alumna Teresa Lane ’82 has established the Teresa Parham Lane Endowed Nursing Scholarship to assist undergraduate students who are pursuing a nursing degree.

Memorial oncology scholarship to benefit nursing students

The gift agreement is dated April 14, 2019, the day that would have been their 35th wedding anniversary. To remember a lifetime of love and support and a career of caring, on that day Scott Hill ’83 made official the Susan P. Hill Memorial Oncology Scholarship.

The $25,000 gift will establish a fund to support outstanding nursing students interested in a career in oncology, the field that Susan Hill ’86 dedicated 33 years to before passing away last fall following her own battle with a brain tumor.
