Jeff Campbell is associate director for the Office of Environmental Health and Safety, effective Friday, Aug. 31.

Campbell is a safety professional with 20-plus years of experience; he comes to UNC Charlotte from Ohio University where he worked as the occupational safety officer and director of environmental health and safety. Additionally, he served as the interim associate vice president for risk management and safety.

The Charlotte City Council voted unanimously to invest $8 million toward the completion of the Marriott Hotel and Conference Center at UNC Charlotte. This planned conference center will enable the University to bring large research symposia and academic conferences to Charlotte.

Kathryn Horne, director of facilities planning, has been appointed interim associate vice chancellor for facilities management. She succeeds Phil Jones, who is retiring after more than 17 years of service.

Lee Snodgrass, director of facilities operations, will be interim associate vice chancellor for safety and security, succeeding Hank James, who is retiring after 9 years with the University.

They will begin their appointments effective Sept. 1.

UNC Charlotte, with assistance from Clean Air Carolina, recently changed its “Design and Construction Manual” to require contracted companies to reduce diesel fuel emissions while working on campus. These new standards, which will apply to all future construction projects on campus, do not affect projects already in progress or out for bid.

University Convocation and the Day of Convocation provide unique opportunities for the campus community to gather and celebrate the start of the 2018-19 academic year.

CATS light rail service to the UNC Charlotte Main and J.W. Clay/UNC Charlotte Stations has been suspended.

In the early morning hours of Monday, July 9, a car accident at Institute Circle on North Tryon Street damaged the catenary system. It is expected the repairs could take two to three days to complete.

Beginning Monday, July 2, residency determinations for graduate students at UNC Charlotte will be centralized at the statewide North Carolina Residency Determination Service (RDS) rather than determined locally on campus.

New applicants claiming North Carolina residency as well as currently enrolled students who wish to apply for in-state residency for tuition purposes will be required to do so through the RDS. This change occurred for undergraduate students early last year. 

For nearly 30 years, UNC Charlotte leaders have envisioned opening a conference center and hotel on the University campus. UNC Charlotte’s exponential growth, coupled with light rail’s arrival and a burgeoning University City, marks now as the time to realize that vision.

On Monday, June 11, Chancellor Philip L. Dubois approved the new University Policy 717, Unmanned Aircraft Systems (UAS).

The use of Unmanned Aircraft Systems (UAS), more commonly known as drones, on campus has increased significantly during the last few years. Use of such equipment presents great opportunities for the University but presents some risks that must be addressed as well.

The North Carolina General Assembly has ratified and forwarded to Gov. Roy Cooper its budget proposal for 2018-19. While the legislation includes the enrollment funding for UNC System campuses appropriated in the two-year budget approved last year, it also contains an $800,000 recurring cut to UNC Charlotte’s budget.
