Lee College’s Armando Castaneda has died

Armando Castaneda, a staff member with Mosaic Computing in the Lee College of Engineering, died Sunday, Sept. 2.

Castaneda, a technology support specialist, joined the University in 2008. A veteran in the computer industry with more than 20 years of experience, Castaneda previously worked for the Sun-Sentinel newspaper in South Florida where he was responsible for 600-plus computer users in five locations.

Communication studies professor named journal associate editor

Min Jiang, an associate professor in the Department of Communication Studies, will begin a four-year tenure as associate editor of the Sage journal, Communication and the Public, in January 2019.

Hinman needs shared leave

Patrick Hinman from FM Central Operations needs shared leave donations. The Benefits Office will accept donations through Sept. 18.

Trahan joins UNC Charlotte as assistant general counsel

Bradley (Brad) Trahan recently joined UNC Charlotte’s Office of Legal Affairs as assistant general counsel following a national search.

Novant’s Beth Crigler to join University Advancement

Novant Health Foundation’s Beth Crigler is joining the UNC Charlotte Division of University Advancement as associate vice chancellor for University development, effective Sept. 17. In this role, she will provide strategic vision to oversee the University’s fundraising functions, including EXPONENTIAL: The Campaign for UNC Charlotte.

Campbell named associate director for EHS

Jeff Campbell is associate director for the Office of Environmental Health and Safety, effective Friday, Aug. 31.

Campbell is a safety professional with 20-plus years of experience; he comes to UNC Charlotte from Ohio University where he worked as the occupational safety officer and director of environmental health and safety. Additionally, he served as the interim associate vice president for risk management and safety.

University patent policy revised

On Aug. 23, University Policy 301, Patent Policy was revised with the following changes: 

Code of Student Responsibility revised

On Aug. 17,  University Policy 406, Code of Student Responsibility, was revised to (a) ensure compliance with federal, state and local law; federal and state guidance; and UNC System policy, (b) reflect current institutional practices and national best and emerging practices and (c) promote a policy that is easier to understand for the various stakeholders involved in the conduct process (e.g., students, representatives, administrators).

Smith appointed director of university budgets and financial planning

Kenneth (Ken) Smith is the new director of university budgets and financial planning. He assumed this role Aug 1.

As the University’s budget director, Smith will lead the budgeting processes for the General Fund and auxiliary and student fee operating budgets. He will be responsible for financial planning and analysis for capital projects and providing legislative, policy and management guidance for University leaders. He will report to Anne Brown, associate vice chancellor for finance.

Interim associate vice chancellors for facilities management, safety and security appointed

Kathryn Horne, director of facilities planning, has been appointed interim associate vice chancellor for facilities management. She succeeds Phil Jones, who is retiring after more than 17 years of service.

Lee Snodgrass, director of facilities operations, will be interim associate vice chancellor for safety and security, succeeding Hank James, who is retiring after 9 years with the University.

They will begin their appointments effective Sept. 1.
