49er Rocketry team places second in NASA event
The UNC Charlotte Rocketry team finished second overall and first in the payload portion of the 2020 NASA Student Launch competition. This is the third consecutive year a UNC Charlotte team has been the overall runners-up in this national event.Although the program was delayed and the annual launch finale event in Huntsville, Alabama, canceled, 54 teams competed remotely in the design, building and testing portions of the competition.
UNC Charlotte’s Niner University Elementary readies to open
As teachers across the region prepare for a different sort of school year, faculty and staff at Charlotte’s newest school are in the building at Niner University Elementary at Amay James (NUE), readying for its opening on Monday, Aug. 17.
Keynton moves into Lee College dean’s office
Rob Keynton is officially on the job as dean of the William States Lee College of Engineering. Undergraduate and graduate students from several engineering disciplines and organizations recently pitched in to help set up his new office in Duke Centennial Hall.
Returning to campus safely with ‘The New Norm’

Local exhibit features work by two art students
Art students Malik J. Norman and Ajané Williams are among the 11 artists featured in an exhibition at Gallery C3, located in Charlotte’s South End district.Curated by Janelle Dunlap, the show “H20/20, Elemental Retribution” includes work by professional artists from Charlotte; Chicago; Columbia, South Carolina; and Pasadena, California.
Reynolds named to Manning Award watch list
Charlotte 49ers redshirt junior quarterback Chris Reynolds has been named to the Watch List for the 2020 Manning Award, which is sponsored by the Allstate Sugar Bowl and presented annually to the top quarterback in college football. It is the second national Watch List that Reynolds has been named to this preseason. Last week, Reynolds earned a spot on the Maxwell Trophy Player of the Year List.
New programming initiative engages first-year students
Year One Launch, a new programming series featuring more than 90 virtual events between Aug. 3 and Sept. 3, will connect incoming students to the University prior to their first day of class.
Belk College launches ‘Charlotte Business Buzz’ podcast
A new podcast mini-series is pulling the resources and partners of UNC Charlotte to help Queen City businesses weather the financial storm brought on by the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic. Charlotte Business Buzz, which launched recently with five episodes, features one-on-one interviews with UNC Charlotte researchers, experts who advise businesses and alumni who are driving business in the Queen City.
