Nursing School director to lead statewide council

Dena Evans, director of the UNC Charlotte School of Nursing, has been elected president of North Carolina Council of Higher Education.Evans was selected for a two-year term as leader of the organization composed of deans and directors from Schools of Nursing in North Carolina. She will begin her term July 1, 2020.

Planning for the second annual TEDxUNCCharlotte, an independently organized live TEDx event, has begun.During TEDxUNCCharlotte 2020, scheduled for March 27, speakers will present ideas that center around the theme “Thinking Future. Thinking Forward.”The online speaker application is available on the TEDxUNCCharlotte website and is open to all students, faculty, staff, alumni and community members. The deadline to apply is Thursday, Oct. 31, by 11:59 p.m.

Niner Nation: Register to vote

Civic engagement and education go hand-in-hand, and one important aspect of shaping American society is through the ballot box.UNC Charlotte Votes, a student-led, nonpartisan initiative that is part of the 49er Democracy Experience, is sponsoring Voter Registration Thursdays on Oct. 3 and 10. Members of the campus community are encouraged to stop by Atkins Library between 11 a.m. and 1 p.m. to learn more about the voting process and drop off their printed and signed TurboVote voter registration form.

Duke University professor to give Maxwell-Roddey Lecture

Keisha Bentley-Edwards, an assistant professor at Duke University’s School of Medicine, will present “Black Women and Reproductive Justice: A Lifelong Health Issue” at 4 p.m., Thursday, Oct. 24, in the Cone University Center, McKnight Hall. This public presentation is this year’s Bertha Maxwell-Roddey Distinguished Africana Lecture, sponsored by the Africana Studies Department.

The UNC Charlotte Alumni Association celebrated Homecoming Week by honoring outstanding 49er alumni with the 10 Under 10 and Excellence in Leadership awards.

Johnson Alumni Way honors dedicated donors Gene and Vickie Johnson

Gene Johnson ’73 unveiled Johnson Alumni Way during Homecoming Saturday with the Pride of Niner Nation Marching Band watching. It was only fitting that the band be there; it was a generous donation from Gene and his wife Vickie ’71 ’82 that made the Pride of Niner Nation possible.
