“Graphic Medicine: Ill-Conceived and Well-Drawn” is a traveling exhibit from the History of Medicine Division of the National Library of Medicine. This display, which explores a field of literacy in which comics tell personal stories of illness and health, will be exhibited on the library’s first floor through Sunday, Nov. 24.

Monday, Nov. 11, is Veterans Day, and it is the appropriate date for the grand opening ceremony for UNC Charlotte’s new Veterans Park.The park was conceived by Christopher Orr ’18 as a place on campus to recognize UNC Charlotte’s historical connections to veteran students and to honor all past, present and future veterans who will attend or work at the University.

Cato College of Education alumna Bonnie Roop ’19 is the 2019 North Carolina Student Teacher of the Year. Roop, who student-taught at Kannapolis Middle School before being hired full-time at Martin Luther King Jr. Middle School in Charlotte, is described as a nurturing educator and careful planner who uses research-based practices and focuses on the individual needs of her students. Her field supervisor lauded her “persistence in making her students feel cared for, believed in and successful.” 

Voting early in this year’s local elections is easy with “Party to the Polls.” From Monday, Oct. 28, through Wednesday, Oct. 30, shuttles to the closest polling location, 8802 J.W. Clay Boulevard, will be offered.This effort is a partnership between the 49er Democracy Experience and the Student Government Association. Shuttles will depart from the Popp Martin Student Union between 2 and 4 p.m.; the last shuttle will return to campus by 5 p.m.

Famed historian visits campus, Johnson Alumni Way opens and 49er Democracy Experience kicks off.

Victoria Watlington ’13 (D) won the Charlotte City Council District 3 primary last month, and with no general election opponent, she is elected to the council.

Acclaimed historian and scholar Henry Louis Gates Jr. spoke to a capacity crowd in McKnight Hall about how he came to produce his television series, “Finding Your Roots.”

UNC Charlotte Chancellor Philip L. Dubois joined the leaders of four other Charlotte-area colleges to discuss the future of higher education on Wednesday, Oct. 16.

As director of University Recreation, Jim Walczyk is responsible for all aspects of UNC Charlotte’s recreational programs and facilities. He has worked at the University for more than six years and has donated to Giving Green each year.
