Charlotte alumnus takes national stage for RNC
On March 8, Michael Whatley ’91 was elected co-chair of the Republican National Committee ahead of November’s national election. Whatley previously served as chairman of the North Carolina Republican Party since 2019.
Whatley, who earned a bachelor’s degree in history from UNC Charlotte, attended Wake Forest University, where he completed a master’s degree in religion. He also earned a master’s in theology and a law degree from the University of Notre Dame.

Social 704 awarded Certificate of Merit for Excellence in project Implementation
The design and construction teams responsible for the complete renovation of Social 704 in the Popp Martin Student Union were awarded a Certificate of Merit by the State Building Commission in the category of Excellence in Project Implementation. The award was presented during the annual state construction conference March 7.
Two UNC Charlotte students nominated for the prestigious Goldwater Scholarship
Two outstanding UNC Charlotte Honors College juniors have been nominated for the 2024 Barry Goldwater Scholarship, considered one of the top awards for undergraduate U.S. STEM students. The scholarship helps identify the next generation of leaders in scientific, mathematical and engineering research, funding up to $7,500 annually for their education.
Art professor Lydia Thompson to be honored by global ceramic arts organization
Lydia Thompson, professor of art, will receive a 2024 National Council on Education for the Ceramic Arts Honorary Member Award at the organization’s annual conference in Richmond, Virginia.
For more than five decades, recipients of the Honorary Member Award have been recognized as individuals “whose commitments to creativity, scholarship, activism or professionalism have made transformative contributions to the ceramic arts.”
Art professor Lisa Homann co-curating international exhibition of West African masquerade artists
Associate Professor of Art History Lisa Homann is a key member of a team developing the internationally traveling exhibition “New Masks Now: Artists Innovating Masquerade in Contemporary West Africa.” The exhibition is organized by the New Orleans Museum of Art and supported by a $500,000 grant from the National Endowment for the Humanities.
