‘Make BIG Things Happen’ with Niner Nation Gives
Make big things happen for 49ers, by participating in this year’s #NinerNationGives. The fourth annual 49-hour digital fundraising event kicks off Wednesday, Sept. 26, and goes through 9 a.m., Friday, Sept. 28.
UNC Charlotte helping with Hurricane Florence relief efforts
From the loss of lives to the loss of property, Hurricane Florence has devastated the Carolinas. It will not be easy for storm victims in North and South Carolina to rebuild their lives, and they will deal with the hurricane’s effects for some time.
UNC Charlotte is organizing various collection drives to assist those impacted by the storm.
Faces – Jordan Harris
Jordan Harris is on a mission to make everyone on campus rethink community engagement. She wants every member of the UNC Charlotte community to see a place for themselves in the University’s commitment to outreach in the city.
She’s driven in part because of her responsibility as the associate director of community relations and also because of her own experiences in life.
Fall Plant Sale to offer a variety of garden selections
The Fall Plant Sale at the UNC Charlotte Botanical Gardens is a great place to find selections that will yield spring blooms.
This annual sale will be 9 a.m. to 3 p.m., Friday and Saturday, Oct. 5-6, at the McMillan Greenhouse. A preview sale will be noon to 3 p.m., Thursday, Oct. 4, for members of the campus community and garden stewards. Students, faculty and staff receive a 10 percent discount with UNC Charlotte ID.
Screening of ‘The Silent Holy Stones’ scheduled
A free screening of the film “The Silent Holy Stones” is scheduled for noon, Friday, Sept. 28, in the Cone University Center, McKnight Hall.
Prior to the screening, the film director’s Wanmacaidan will give a brief lecture, starting at 10:30 a.m., and a complimentary light lunch will be served at 11:30 a.m. A question-and-answer session will follow the screening. The film is presented in Tibetan with English and Chinese subtitles.
CCI receives national award for retention of underrepresented students
The College of Computing and Informatics (CCI) was awarded the second annual CMD-IT University Award for Retention of Minorities and Students with Disabilities in Computer Science by the Center for Minorities and People with Disabilities in IT (CMID-IT). This honor highlights organizations that have exhibited commitment and success in accommodating students from underrepresented groups in undergraduate Computer Science programs.
Connect with the campus during Traditions Walk, part of UNC Charlotte’s Founders Day festivities
Members of Niner Nation know that UNC Charlotte was founded on Sept. 23, 1946, as the Charlotte Center, an evening college to educate the scores of veterans returning to the area after World War II. In honor of UNC Charlotte’s 72nd birthday, the Office of Alumni Affairs is encouraging students to take the Traditions Walk, a short tour of a few of the University’s notable sites.
Finnish ambassador to address ‘Transatlantic Relations’
Kirsti Kauppi, ambassador of Finland to the United States, will present “Transatlantic Relations: A Finnish Perspective” at 3:30 p.m., Wednesday, Oct. 3, in the Cone University Center, Room 208, as part of the Fall 2018 International Speaker Series.
Record student enrollment at UNC Charlotte closes in on 30,000
With a total student population bumping against 30,000 to start the 2018-19 academic year, UNC Charlotte continues its longstanding upward growth. With a record-breaking total enrollment of 29,710, UNC Charlotte trails only North Carolina State University and UNC Chapel Hill in terms of student body size among the UNC System’s 17 campuses.
ACEing Autism launching tennis program at UNC Charlotte
Nonprofit organization ACEing Autism will hold tennis clinics at UNC Charlotte beginning Sunday, Sept. 30.
According to Nils Weldy, marketing director for the organization, ACEing Autism is a national nonprofit that provides tennis clinics specially designed by autism and tennis professionals to encourage social interaction between peers and volunteers, improve physical fitness and allow for flexibility within the clinics to ensure children have fun.
