Calling all 49er ACEs
The newly formed 49er ACE (Alumni Campus Employee) group recently gathered for an end of summer reception at the Harris Alumni Center at Johnson Glen. Currently, there are more than 600 faculty and staff members who are proud UNC Charlotte alumni.
Architecture teams win top prizes in design competition
Two teams from the School of Architecture have won top awards in the 2017-18 Steel Design Student Competition hosted by the American Institute of Steel Construction and the Association of Collegiate Schools of Architecture.
The competition recognizes exceptional projects in two categories, one addressing affordable housing and the other for open submissions that explore a variety of issues related to the use of steel in design and construction. More than 300 projects were submitted from universities across the United States and abroad; 16 projects were honored.
Urban design professor named Niantic/Knight Fellow
Ming-Chun Lee, a professor in the School of Architecture’s Master of Urban Design program, has been named one of five inaugural fellows in the Niantic/Knight Fellows Program, a community engagement initiative by the John S. and James L. Knight Foundation and Niantic Inc., maker of the popular Pokémon GO game. The fellowship will support projects that address community issues and promote resident engagement using Niantic’s augmented reality technology.
Voice professor releases album featuring black composers
Assistant Professor of Voice Carl DuPont had the new album, “The Reaction,” released by Albany Records. It features songs by black composers, most of whom have never been recorded.

Call for alumni nominations
The Black Alumni Chapter is seeking nominations for its 2018 Excellence in Leadership Award. The program, established in 2011, recognizes the accomplishments of UNC Charlotte alumni and friends in the greater Charlotte region who have achieved excellence in the areas of education; entrepreneurship; financial services; health care; philanthropy; public service; and science, technology, engineering and math (STEM). Historian to talk about ‘When Government Was Good’
The GI Bill, environmental protections and the desegregation of public schools and housing were all “gifts” to the Baby Boomer generation. Post-World War II legislative actions led by Presidents Truman, Eisenhower and Johnson were based on the belief that encouraging individual opportunity would result in the betterment of the entire nation.
Lecture series to explore upcoming presidential election in Bosnia and Herzegovina
A series of five events this fall will focus on the campaign for and election of the tripartite presidency in Bosnia and Herzegovina. Mirsad Hadžikadić, a well-known UNC Charlotte professor, is one of the candidates.
