Environmental Health and Safety wins state accolades
The Office of Environmental Health and Safety (EHS) recently received the North Carolina Department of Labor’s (NCDOL) Five Million Hour Award and First-year Gold Award. Theses honors were based on submitted efforts from 2017.
The Million Hour Safety Awards are distributed to organizations that achieve at least one million consecutive employee hours without injury or illness that may cause days off work. Each additional one million hours is accumulated into more prestigious recognition.
Five facts to know about Meck Dec Day
In Charlotte, “Meck Dec Day” is celebrated every year on May 20. As an observance of the first declaration of independence against British rule – more than a year before the country’s official declaration on July 4, 1776 – it remains unfamiliar to many Charlotteans. UNC Charlotte’s Atkins Library Specials Collections counts among its holdings a rare 1826 printing of the Mecklenburg Declaration.
Active Learning Expo provided ‘vibrant forum’ to share teaching strategies
Active learning has been defined as activities that students can utilize to better construct knowledge and understanding. UNC Charlotte’s Active Learning Academy in the Center for Teaching and Learning supports faculty members to develop such techniques for their classes, and recently, the center hosted an expo that featured academy faculty teams that shared their projects designed to promote active learning.
Minority fellowship to support counseling student’s work with underserved youth
Counseling master’s student Amie Begg has received a national fellowship to support her education and facilitate her addictions counseling service to underserved minority youth.
The National Board for Certified Counselors (NBCC) Minority Fellowship Program-Addictions Counselors (MFP-AC) is awarded annually. The program’s goal is to reduce health disparities and improve behavioral health care outcomes for diverse populations by increasing the available number of culturally competent behavioral health professionals.
Blooming of second rare ‘corpse flower’ anticipated
“Odie,” the UNC Charlotte Botanical Garden’s other mature Titan Arum, is expected to blossom this month. This will be the second time the 12-year-old specimen will bloom at McMillan Greenhouse; the first time was in 2015.
