CCI associate dean recognized for work in diversity
The Center for Minorities and People with Disabilities in Information Technology (CMD-IT) is honoring Manuel Pérez Quiñones, associate dean for the College of Computing and Informatics, with the 2017 Richard Tapia Achievement Award for Scientific Scholarship, Civic Science and Diversity in Computing.
This award is bestowed annually to an individual who demonstrates significant leadership, commitment and contributions to diversifying computing.
Belk Gym namesake an admired leader, education advocate
Belk Gym is a bigger, better facility now than when it was first constructed in 1970. One of the oldest buildings on campus, Belk Gym houses recreational and academic opportunities for students. Reality star Whitney Way Thore to address body shaming, healthy living
Star of TLC’s “My Big Fat Fabulous Life” and body-positive activist Whitney Way Thore will spend March 30 leading an afternoon fitness class, and in the evening, she will continue the conversation about body image.
Thore will host her “Werk With Whitney” dance class at 12:30 p.m. in the Belk Gym. Special guests include KISS 95.1, UNC Charlotte Panhellenic Association, the Epsilon Phi Chapter of the Lambda Theta Alpha Sorority, the Iota Rho Chapter of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority Inc. and the Alpha Lambda Chapter of Chi Upsilon Sigma Sorority.

Submit proposals for Chancellor’s Diversity Challenge Fund
The Council on University Community is accepting proposals for the Chancellor’s Diversity Challenge Fund, which supports initiatives that promote the daily value of diversity in the intellectual life of the campus. Faculty, staff or students are eligible to apply for awards of up to $5,000.
U.S. representative to keynote annual MLK celebration
U.S. Rep. Alma Adams (NC-12) will present “Revolutionizing the Dream,” celebrating the life, work and legacy of Martin Luther King Jr., at 3:30 p.m., Tuesday, Jan. 17, in the Cone University Center, McKnight Hall. This event is free and open to the public.
“We are excited to have Congresswoman Adams address our campus community for this year’s MLK celebration,” said Kim Turner, director of the UNC Charlotte Multicultural Resource Center. “She has dedicated her life to public service, helping shape local communities as well as influencing policy on the national level.”
College of Education named for Cato Corp.
