CTL to hold second research showcase
The Center for Teaching and Learning will hold its second Scholarship of Teaching and Learning (SoTL) Research Showcase from 2 to 4 p.m., Friday, Feb. 19, in the lobby of the Robinson Hall for the Performing Arts.
The showcase will feature poster presentations from 18 different faculty members from a range of departments and disciplines in 10 different projects funded by the UNC Charlotte Scholarship of Teaching and Learning Grants program.
Online nursing program jumps in national rankings
The UNC Charlotte School of Nursing’s national profile received a significant boost this month with the online graduate program’s 33-spot ascendance in the 2016 U.S. News & World Report rankings.
The program jumped to 54 in the national rankings, up from 87 last year. Department Chair Dee Baldwin attributed the improvement to multiple factors, including:

Campus graphic designer among winners in international comic contest
Myron Macklin, a graphic designer in the Office of University Communications, was selected by Mark Millar to collaborate in the creation of a charity comic book.
Miller, the writer behind the Kingsman, Kick-Ass and Jupiter’s Circle series, sponsored the international contest. Six artists, six writers and a cover artist were selected to use Millar’s characters in the creation of the charity comic scheduled to be released later this year.
‘Emotional Intelligence’ subject of ACCEHW webinar
The Advisory Committee to the Chancellor for Employee Health and Wellness is sponsoring the webinar “Emotional Intelligence” at noon, Wednesday, Feb. 10.
Employees interesting in viewing this offering, which deals with identifying and managing one’s own emotions and those of others, should register online.
MSW student receives state award
Aayla Alexander, a graduate student in social work, is the 2016 recipient of the Presidents’ Award from the National Association of Social Workers North Carolina chapter (NASW-NC).
According to the association, Alexander was selected for exhibiting a “dedication to the social work profession through her academic excellence, community involvement and professional experience,” and the award honors her “exceptional leadership skills and professional potential.”
Annual 49er Gold Rush 5K Run/Walk scheduled
Registration is open for the 49er Gold Rush 5K, presented by Novant Health and the UNC Charlotte Recreational Services Department. This event is set for 9 a.m., Saturday, Feb. 6, at Irwin Belk Track and Field Complex.
Race day check-in, packet pickup and registration will be 7:30 to 8:30 a.m. at the track level. Net proceeds from the 5K will benefit UNC Charlotte student development scholarships; direct donations will be accepted for Girls on the Run, a Charlotte-based nonprofit that uses running to inspire young girls.
CTI to present conversation on global energy and education
Charlotte-Mecklenburg Schools (CMS) teachers will share bright, new ideas for teaching and learning about energy at a Charlotte Teachers Institute (CTI) event scheduled for 5:30 to 8 p.m., Thursday, Feb. 4, at the Discovery Place in Uptown Charlotte.
Partnership helps Union County teachers earn graduate degrees
A new UNC Charlotte College of Education partnership under way in Union County is allowing a group of teachers to earn a master’s degree in education through a new model that brings that graduate classroom to them.
The pilot program offers 16 teachers in high priority middle and high schools the opportunity to earn a Master of Education at a significantly reduced rate, while collaborating with College of Education professors on site near their home schools.
Sports club participants win inaugural statewide canned food competition
UNC Charlotte’s Sport Clubs program was the overall winner of the inaugural First in Flight Fight Against Hunger, a statewide canned food drive competition.
For this food drive, 898 student-athletes from campus collected 2,200 pounds of canned food. Approximately 7,150 pounds of canned food were collected by the 11 collegiate sport clubs programs that participated.
