Charlotte Venture Challenge application prep session scheduled
The 2015 Charlotte Venture Challenge business innovation competition, is accepting applications from early-stage entrepreneurial companies through noon, Tuesday, March 3.
The competition is open to early-stage companies that will compete in one of four categories 1) new energy and high tech; 2) IT and informatics; 3) health IT and biotech sciences; and 4) general, which includes consumer products. Student teams will compete in either graduate student ventures or undergraduate student ventures.
Charlotte 49ers announce 2015 FBS football schedule
The Charlotte 49ers have announced their 12-game 2015 football schedule. It will mark the 49ers first season as an FBS program competing in Conference USA.
Melissa Harris-Perry to address gender/race issues, student tickets available starting Feb. 16
Wake Forest University professor and MSNBC television host Melissa Harris-Perry will discuss “Mommy, Mammy and the Maid: Race, Class and Women’s Political Power” for UNC Charlotte’s ninth annual Women’s and Gender Studies Speaker Series at 8 p.m., Wednesday, April 1, in the Student Union, Room 340.
U.S. Army Drill Team to perform
The UNC Charlotte Army ROTC program will host a free performance of the U.S. Army Drill Team at 10 a.m., Tuesday, Feb. 10, in Halton Arena.
The U.S. Army Drill Team is a precision drill platoon with a primary mission of showcasing the U.S. Army both nationally and internationally; the team’s 19 members perform various routines using bayonet-tipped 1903 Springfield rifles.
Historian to appear on ‘Charlotte Talks’
John David Smith, the Charles Stone Distinguished Professor of History, will be a guest on the Feb. 3 edition of WFAE’s “Charlotte Talks.” He will discuss his book “Lincoln and the U.S. Colored Troops.”

Graduate Research Symposium seeking submissions
Each year, UNC Charlotte’s Graduate School supports the Graduate and Professional Student Government (GPSG) to plan the Graduate Research Symposium (GRS), a student-run conference that showcases the latest student research taking place on campus.
Chancellor to receive CASE district award for diversity efforts
Chancellor Philip L. Dubois is the 2014-15 recipient of the Council for Advancement and Support of Education (CASE) District III Inclusion and Diversity Leadership Award, which recognizes an individual for his/her efforts to foster inclusion and diversity within the higher education profession, on his/her campus or in the greater community.
Pilot program to monitor electric vehicles, University to add 20 charging stations
UNC Charlotte is committed to becoming a regional model of sustainable stewardship, and toward that goal, the University recently earned two Clean Fuel Advanced Technology Project grants totaling $64,000.
Next generation Inside UNC Charlotte website to launch Friday
Inside UNC Charlotte, the online campus news/information resource for UNC Charlotte employees, is getting a new look, and the redesigned site launches Friday, Jan. 30. It was a collaborative effort by units within University communications, based upon feedback and suggestions from users across campus.
Campus, city responding to need for more bike paths, sidewalks
The University City area continues to grow with new apartments and retail centers, and UNC Charlotte, along with the city, is making plans to accommodate alternative ways to get around.
“As the University improves existing roads and builds new ones, we are adding lanes to our existing bike lane system,” said Peter Franz, the campus landscape architect. He added the Charlotte Department of Transportation (CDOT) has been a great partner in identifying the need for more bike lanes and sidewalks around the campus.
