Staff Council to create ‘Golden Nugget Award’

UNC Charlotte recognizes employees through various teaching awards and the Employee of the Year Awards; however, the UNC Charlotte Staff Council is creating a new honor to celebrate workers’ “everyday” efforts to exceed job expectations.

UNC Charlotte Center City to become home of N.C. Humanities Council

The North Carolina Humanities Council (NCHC) will move its administrative offices to Charlotte in early 2015, to take advantage of what its leaders believe are new and exciting opportunities for organizational development and collaborations in the state’s largest city.

University to award 3,300 degrees at Dec. 13 commencement, 81-year-old among the graduates

Commencement ceremonies celebrate the completion of one’s educational journey – no matter how long it may take. This is especially true for one UNC Charlotte graduate at fall commencement Saturday, Dec. 13.

Barbara Coberly, 81, will be among the roughly 3,320 students who will gather with family, friends and others in Halton Arena to receive their undergraduate, master’s or doctoral degrees.

NEA grant to support Projective Eye Gallery’s ‘KEEPING WATCH on WATER’

The UNC Charlotte College of Arts + Architecture will receive a $10,000 National Endowment of the Arts (NEA) Challenge America grant to support programming by the Projective Eye Gallery for the “KEEPING WATCH on WATER: City of Creeks” project. The NEA received 347 eligible Challenge America applications and will award 163 grants for a total of $1.63 million.

Graduate School to hold information sessions for employees

Full-time employees can take three classes per year, tuition free. Employees who have earned a bachelor’s degree can apply easily for admission as a graduate certificate or post-baccalaureate (non-degree) student without standardized tests, transcripts or recommendation requirements.

Dance students to perform with Graham Company

Students from the UNC Charlotte Department of Dance will perform Martha Graham’s “Steps in the Street” (1936) for a program with the Martha Graham Dance Company being presented by the Blumenthal Performing Arts Center on Tuesday, Jan. 20, at the Knight Theater.

Kim Jones, assistant professor of dance, régisseur for the Martha Graham Resource Center and a former member of the Martha Graham Dance Company, restaged the work.

Dec. 9 meeting to outline plans for North Tryon Street development

Charlotte Area Transit Systems (CATS) and the Charlotte-Mecklenburg Planning Department will host a community meeting from 6 to 8 p.m. Tuesday, Dec. 9, at the Oasis Shriners Center, 604 Doug Mayes Place, off of J.W. Clay Boulevard.

Faculty/Staff Appreciation Day at campus bookstore

Barnes & Noble at UNC Charlotte, the campus bookstore located in the Student Union, will hold a Faculty and Staff Appreciation Day on Monday, Dec. 15. Employees will receive a 30 percent discount on selected merchandise (an additional 10 percent beyond the normal 20 percent that faculty and staff receive). The 30 percent discount applies to all clothing and other merchandise (gifts, trade books and supplies), except textbooks and graduation and convenience food items. 

To obtain the discount, faculty and staff members must present their valid 49er ID card.

Three parking lots to close temporarily starting Dec. 15

Due to a storm drain relocation project, Parking Lots 25 and 26 and North Deck will be closed from Monday, Dec. 15, through Tuesday, Dec. 23.

All vehicles must be moved prior to Dec. 15 as there will be no access to these lots during their closure (click to see the map). Students who leave their cars on campus during winter break are encouraged to use the Union Deck.
