WOW events build Niner Nation pride

Week of Welcome (WOW) is an annual tradition and helps the University kick off the academic year. More than 50 events take place between Friday, Aug. 15, and Sunday, Aug. 24.
The focus of WOW is to celebrate Niner pride and welcome all new and returning students to campus and will offer various opportunities for engagement within the UNC Charlotte community, said Emily Jensen, associate director for new student services in the Division for Student Affairs.

Welcome – A guide to week one

Fall semester always is an exciting time as a new academic year gets under way at UNC Charlotte. More than 30,000 students, faculty and staff will be on campus engaged in research, scholarly or life-enriching pursuits. This includes an incoming freshman class of about 3,350 and roughly 2,700 transfer students.

Eat Smart, Move More, Weigh Less begins Sept. 8

Register for the next offering of Eat Smart, Move More, Weigh Less that begins on Monday, Sept. 8.
The 15-week weight-management program Eat Smart, Move More, Weigh Less was developed by health experts, and it is open to State Health Plan members who can participate for $30 with a $25 refund for those who attend 10 of the 15 sessions.
The course fee must be paid at the first session. Fifteen registrants are needed to form a class. Tina Mendieta from the Mecklenburg County Health Department will lead the program, which will meet at noon in Colvard Building, Room 5092.

UWP conference to focus on improving student writing

The UNC Charlotte University Writing Program will hold the conference ““Bridging Inquiries: Research, Process, and Literacy from High School to Higher Ed” on Friday, Sept. 12, at UNC Charlotte Center City.

New Graduate Life Fellows named

As the academic year gets under way, seven graduate students are ready to help welcome their peers to campus. They are the 2014-15 Graduate Life Fellows.
In this capacity, the students will offer guidance and promote engagement through first-hand experience, peer mentorship and graduate student events.  They will work with incoming graduate students and provide opportunities for them to network across disciplines. GLFs receive an award annually for their contributions to the UNC Charlotte graduate student community. 

University conducts emergency response simulation with city, county agencies

Training is essential to the University’s efforts to maintain a safe and secure campus. Recently, UNC Charlotte held an emergency response simulation at Jerry Richardson Stadium, in conjunction with City of Charlotte and Mecklenburg County agencies.

UNC Charlotte students win national college bass fishing title

Andrew Helms and Jake Whitaker recently teamed to win the 2014 Carhartt Bassmaster College Series National Championship held at Chatuge Reservoir in Georgia.

Helms, a junior marketing major from Monroe, and Whitaker, a senior civil engineering major from Fairview, caught 15 fish during the three-day team event. Their total catch weight of 38 pounds and 9 ounces topped the second-place finishers by 8 ounces.

Faces – John Renwick

Earlier this year, John Renwick was honored as one of the Employees of the Year in the safety/heroism category for coming to the aid of a campus visitor.
While humbled to be singled out as one of the recipients, Renwick said he was glad he could render assistance to an individual in distress.
Renwick, a facilities management Zone 4 staff member, noticed a stopped car blocking traffic on Alumni Way, near the Residence Dining Hall (RDH) on June 3, 2013. He discovered the man was in diabetic shock.

Alumnus has top Twitter account to follow on immigration

Paul McDaniel, who completed a doctorate in geography and urban regional analysis from UNC Charlotte, has one of 11 Twitter accounts to follow on skilled immigration reform, according to the Consumer Electronics Association (CEA).
The association noted that McDaniel’s Twitter account offers a “well-curated view of state, national and international factors in the immigration reform debate.” His account was cited along with those of U.S. Senators Dick Durbin and Jeff Flake and N.Y. Times correspondent Julia Preston.
