Serena Kamdem: Leading and building the community ‘living room’
Serena Bemmo Kamdem, who was born in Cameroon, moved to the U.S. Virgin Islands at the age of 7.
Relocating was tough, and her new school suggested ESL classes to avoid being held back a grade. But her dad, a middle school math teacher, created workbooks to help Kamdem and her three siblings learn English with their native French. She recalls sharpening her English by watching PBS and was excited when an episode of “Arthur” mentioned her native country during a song of the 54 nations of Africa.
Niners named to 2024 Business North Carolina Power List
UNC Charlotte Chancellor Sharon L. Gaber and several University alumni and board members have been named to the 2024 Business North Carolina Power List.
Gaber was recognized for the fourth consecutive year in the education category. The publication noted Gaber’s push to expand research and Charlotte’s projection to receive Carnegie R1, or top-tier, research classification in early 2025.
Graphic design class contributes to local history
As they complete their spring semester, students in Christina Singer’s Design Research class have published the sixth digital book to emerge from the Department of Art and Art History’s graphic design program since Singer joined the department in 2021.
A record 5,100-plus students to be recognized at Spring Commencement
On Friday and Saturday, May 10-11, UNC Charlotte will hold Spring Commencement ceremonies for 2024 graduates in Dale F. Halton Arena. During four ceremonies, the University will recognize what is expected to be a record-breaking class.

Fred Klein receives UNC Charlotte Distinguished Service Award
Fred Klein, senior managing partner at Childress Klein, one of the largest full-service commercial real estate firms in the southeast, is the 2024 recipient of the UNC Charlotte Distinguished Service Award.
Experienced business school leader named dean of the Belk College of Business
Richard J. Buttimer Jr. is dean of the Belk College of Business, effective July 1, following approval by the UNC Charlotte Board of Trustees. Buttimer comes to Charlotte from the University of North Florida in Jacksonville, where he has been dean of the Coggin College of Business for four years.
15th class of Levine Scholars to join UNC Charlotte
UNC Charlotte’s Levine Scholars Program has selected 20 exceptional young leaders from across the United States for the 15th class of the University’s most competitive academic scholarship. The scholars will join UNC Charlotte in fall 2024.
Founding dean of the College of Humanities & Earth and Social Sciences named
Christopher R. Boyer has been named the founding dean of the College of Humanities & Earth and Social Sciences at UNC Charlotte following a national search.
