Alumni Karen Popp, Joe Price to receive honorary degrees during Spring Commencement

Karen Popp ’80 and Joe Price ’83 will be awarded honorary Doctor of Public Service degrees in recognition of their service to UNC Charlotte and the citizens of the city, region and state during Charlotte’s Spring Commencement, May 13-14.

Teacher Appreciation Week: student teacher Dakota Walker

Dakota Walker loved school growing up. When she learned she could teach professionally, she wanted to pursue it. As she progressed through high school and college, she found service projects and clinical placements that made her especially interested in the unique needs and talents of special education students.

“I want to be able to give back to students who are in special education and to be there as an advocate and a resource for them,” Walker said.

Military Friendly gives Charlotte gold award designation

For its commitment to military service members, veterans and their dependents, UNC Charlotte has earned a Military Friendly School Gold Award for 2022-23. The University is one of 282 schools to achieve gold status for leading practices, outcomes and effective programs for military-affiliated students. Previously, the University had earned silver designation.

As COVID-19 becomes more of an endemic than a pandemic in the United States, UNC Charlotte continues to make some changes to campus protocols. The University is no longer requiring masks on Niner Transit in line with federal guidelines. Masks will remain mandatory in the Student Health Center.

University recognized for supporting first-generation students

During the pandemic, a new student-run organization began to take shape to connect and support students who identify as first-generation college students. First-Gen Niners brings together campus partners with students who do not have a family history of college attendance to form a support system for the unique challenges and obstacles that many first-generation students face.
