Former UNC President C.D. Spangler has died

C.D. Spangler Jr., 86, died Sunday, July 22; the Charlotte business executive served as UNC System president from 1986 to 1997. During his tenure, he oversaw the installation of UNC Charlotte Chancellor James Woodward in April 1990.

In a Charlotte Observer article, UNC President Margaret Spellings said that Spangler, also known as “Dick,” helped to “change lives and transform a state.”

Federal officials to talk patents, trademarks

Atkins Library will host a seminar led by officials with the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office on Wednesday, Aug. 1. At this event, scheduled for 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. in the Halton Reading Room, speakers will provide an overview of intellectual property terms, and they will discuss how to conduct U.S. patent and trademark database searches and identify scams to watch for when promoting inventions.

A panel of local professionals will answer questions about legal, educational and business resources for inventors and entrepreneurs.

Graduate candidate receives prestigious public health informatics fellowship

Physician and UNC Charlotte graduate candidate Saugat Karki was selected recently for the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention’s (CDC) prestigious Public Health Informatics Fellowship Program (PHIFP).

Graduate student receives national award

Rajan Puri, a doctoral student in mathematics, recently received the David Merchant International Student Award for Achievement from the Phi Beta Delta Honor Society for International Scholars. The award honors one international student who demonstrates exceptional accomplishments in the areas of scholarship and service.

Graduate residency determination moving to state agency

Beginning Monday, July 2, residency determinations for graduate students at UNC Charlotte will be centralized at the statewide North Carolina Residency Determination Service (RDS) rather than determined locally on campus.

New applicants claiming North Carolina residency as well as currently enrolled students who wish to apply for in-state residency for tuition purposes will be required to do so through the RDS. This change occurred for undergraduate students early last year. 

Using Duo to be required beginning January 2019

Effective Jan. 31, 2019, all University employees (full-time, part-time, adjunct faculty, student employees) will be required to use Duo two-factor authentication to access all University single sign-on systems. These include Gmail, NinerNet, Canvas and My UNC Charlotte.

ITS is investigating increasing the password reset time frame for those who use Duo, which significantly improves the security of University data.

Academic Affairs staff member Keisha Martin has died

Keisha Martin, an administrative support associate in the Office of Academic Affairs, died on June 13.

Planned, intermittent network outages scheduled

According to ITS officials, intermittent network outages around campus and in buildings are expected between 6 and 9 p.m., Monday, July 2, due to equipment upgrades.

Outages may affect phones, wireless and wired networks, the internet, time clocks and blue light phones.

 

Data Science Initiative partnership with Packard Place connecting students with industry

UNC Charlotte’s Data Science Initiative (DSI) has announced a partnership with Packard Place, Charlotte’s largest community and co-working space, to provide a new satellite site for the University’s Data Science and Business Analytics (DSBA) graduate programs. Students and faculty will be embedded in an entrepreneurial environment with direct access to startups, potential collaborators, mentors and employers, honoring a key DSI commitment to community engagement.
