The College of Education’s John Beattie is among the five finalists for one of UNC Charlotte’s top honors – the 2015 Bank of America Award for Teaching Excellence.

University welcomes its largest class of international students

Nearly 550 new international students have begun their studies at UNC Charlotte, making this year’s class of incoming learners the University’s largest global contingent to enroll at the start of any semester.

In total, the University is hosting about 1,900 international students who are pursuing undergraduate or graduate degrees or who are here for shorter cultural exchanges that is in addition to language training students. This places UNC Charlotte among the top 125 institutions in the United States in terms of international student enrollment.

ADVANCE Office offers New Faculty Mentoring program

This is the perfect time for new faculty to participate in the ADVANCE Faculty Affairs and Diversity (FADO) New Faculty Mentoring program.

The Office of Research and Economic Development will hold a “meet-and-greet” from noon to 2 p.m., Wednesday, Sept. 23, in the Barnhardt Student Activity Center Salons (C, D and E).

Faculty, staff and students will have an opportunity to meet research and economic development staff and learn more about the services offered by the office. Refreshments will be served, and attendees can enter a drawing for a chance to win a Charlotte 49ers football package (tickets, parking pass and access to the Championship Terrace at halftime).

‘Energy Careers for Veterans’ scheduled

ROTC cadets and alumni/student veterans have the chance to network with representatives from companies in the energy industry during “Energy Careers for Veterans,” scheduled for 10 a.m. to 3 p.m., Wednesday, Sept. 16, at the Motorsports Research Lab.

As part of the event, an NHRA top fuel dragster, sponsored by the U.S. Army and part of Don Schumacher Racing (DSR), will be on display. A DSR crew member will be present to answer questions about the dragster.

EPIC, the Motorsports Engineering program and the University Career Center are cosponsoring this opportunity.

Day of Convocation welcomed new students to the University

UNC Charlotte faculty members enter Halton Arena for the formal ceremony to welcome new students as part of the Day of Convocation Monday, Aug. 24.

Designed as a shared experience for incoming freshmen and transfers, “Day 1” or Day of Convocation was a campus-wide initiative to formally induct these new students into the UNC Charlotte academic community.

Prior to the 11 a.m. ceremony, students gathered at their colleges for welcome remarks from their respective deans prior to proceeding to Halton Arena.

Communication studies faculty member named Cone Early-Career Professor

Margaret Quinlan, associate professor of communication studies, received the Bonnie Cone Early-Career Professorship during the University Convocation, Thursday, Aug. 20.

A three-year appointment, the Cone Early-Career Professorship for Teaching recognizes a recently tenured professor who embodies Bonnie Cone’s tenacious commitment to providing UNC Charlotte undergraduate and graduate students with enriching, high-quality educational experiences. The recipient is nominated by a dean or department chair and selected by a faculty committee of award-winning teachers.

Charlotte Engineering Early College a big draw, waitlist tops 350

While classes don’t start at UNC Charlotte until Aug. 24, there’s already a buzz of activity in the classrooms and hallways at the Charlotte Engineering Early College (CEEC) high school.

Distinct from its peers in one of the state’s largest public school districts, CEEC welcomed its second class of ninth-graders on Aug. 6, along with a handful of sophomore transfers from across Mecklenburg County.
