Madsen named University Career Center director

Patrick Madsen is director of the University Career Center; he officially started the position on Monday, Aug. 17.

Madsen joins the University from UNC Greensboro, where he was director of its Career Services Center. He is recognized for successfully transforming UNC Greensboro’s career center into a contemporary one that meets the needs of today’s students, alumni and employers.

170-plus employers expected at 2015 Career and Public Service Expo

Organizers for this year’s Career and Public Service Expo, hosted by the University Career Center, expect more than 170 organizations to attend the event; the companies will offer students thousands of full-time jobs, internships and co-ops in a range of industries.

For incoming freshmen and transfer students, Monday, Aug. 24, will be “Day 1,” a shared experience in which they will come together to learn more about what it means to be a 49er.

Day One, or Day of Convocation, is a campus-wide initiative designed to formally induct new students into the UNC Charlotte academic community.

House bond proposal includes new science building

Update: On Aug. 6, the House approved the bond bill described below by a vote of 76-29. It now goes to the Senate. The House amended the bill to move the date of the election to March 2016.
The Senate will likely make changes to the bond package.
On Aug. 5, the N.C. House voted 70-39 in an initial vote on the bond package.

Data science class investigating N.C. shark attacks

After weeks of research, graduate students in the UNC Charlotte course “Knowledge Discovery in Databases” have analyzed diverse data sets related to sharks and have discovered certain patterns emerge.

There appears to be a correlation between the frequency of shark attacks and the phases of the moon, with attacks more prevalent around the time of the full moon. Other factors like tourism, crab population and sea temperature also appear in decision trees and rules that were part of the research process.

Faces – Denelle Eads

A one-time freelance writer, Denelle Eads still relies upon her communications background as the outreach and staff development librarian for the J. Murrey Atkins Library.

“I work with colleagues to promote professional development opportunities and coordinate outreach activities to enable us all in the library to get to know each other,” said Eads. “Currently, we have about 85 faculty and staff members in Atkins, and I interact with everyone.”

Top research symposium posters recognized

Three undergraduate students were honored for outstanding posters at the fourth annual Summer Research Symposium as part of the Charlotte Research Scholars program. More than 100 students competed in the competition presenting on a broad range of topics of scholarly inquiry.

New catalogs available online

The 2015-16 undergraduate and graduate catalogs are both available online. The two publications were developed using Acalog, a new catalog content management system.

Acalog provides for a database-driven catalog, meaning that the content of each page is dynamically created for every user upon each visit. It is integrated with Banner, the University’s student information system and with the forthcoming Curriculog, a curriculum management software.

UNC Charlotte ranks high among universities that produce Fortune 500 CEOs

UNC Charlotte shares some pretty impressive company in a new listing from U.S. News and World Report. The story focuses on the educational background of the CEOs from the top 100 companies on this year’s Fortune 500 list, which ranks companies in terms of revenues.

Only a handful of colleges can claim multiple CEOs on the top 100 list, including UNC Charlotte with two. No institution had more than three.

Data Science Initiative topic of July 9 ‘Live Wire’

Rick Hudson, senior project manager for the Data Science Initiative, will be the guest on the July 9 edition of “The Live Wire,” Inside UNC Charlotte’s streaming webcast. He will discuss the Data Science Initiative and SOPHI, a large data repository that is being developed.
