TweetChina explores ‘big data’ and social media
The TweetChina project is designed to explore how China is discussed and represented on Twitter. China-related tweets were selected from several dozen billions of tweets archived by UNC Charlotte’s Charlotte Visualization Center and visually represented in map, picture, text and event modes.
University, SSST formalize collaborative agreement
UNC Charlotte and Sarajevo School of Science and Technology (SSST) have signed a Memorandum of Understanding to initiate joint projects and to partner on scientific research programs common to both institutions.
UNC Charlotte part of $1.5 million N.C. Research Campus project
An unprecedented partnership of academic and industry organizations at the North Carolina Research Campus is launching a $1.5 million program to engage college students from across the state in a first-of-its-kind education and research endeavor – the Plant Pathways Elucidation Project (P2EP).
Second annual Charlotte Research Scholars program to begin
UNC Charlotte’s Charlotte Research Scholars (CRS) program provides undergraduate students the training and experience to be successful in research, a critical component for graduate education. Sixty scholars have been selected for the research program’s second year. Starting Tuesday, May 28, they will conduct original research during a 10-week program in collaboration with a faculty member.
CHARP to host neighborhood forum
The Charlotte Action Research Project (CHARP) will host a neighborhood campus forum from 5:45 to 8 p.m., Wednesday, May 29, in Cone University Center, Room 210.
According to organizers, the forum is designed to connect UNC Charlotte faculty, staff and students with research opportunities with residents of Charlotte’s low-income and minority neighborhoods.
During a series of workshops, CHARP partners identified five research themes for further study: neighborhood change, spatial justice, empowerment and citizen rights, communities and schools and neighborhood safety.
Greensboro-based company wins Charlotte Venture Challenge
Bio-Adhesive Alliance of Greensboro topped the field of 19 finalists to win the $25,000 grand prize of the Charlotte Venture Challenge.
The company, a spinout from N.C. A&T University, has developed an innovative technology to produce liquid asphalt from pig manure.
“This technology provides a sustainable and cost-effective solution to swine manure treatment while reducing pavement construction and maintenance cost,” said company officials.
Van Landingham Glen named for University benefactor
Seven-acre Van Landingham Glen is one of the largest public rhododendron gardens in the Southeastern United States, and it showcases native plants from around the Carolinas, too. Prominent Charlotte stockbroker and philanthropist Ralph Van Landingham provided the financial support for the glen, which was dedicated in his honor on Sunday, April 27, 1966.
Family-friendly offerings at Science and Technology Expo
More than 50 interactive, hands-on activities and displays will be featured during the UNC Charlotte Science and Technology Expo, set for 10 a.m. to 2 p.m., Sunday, April 21, on the plaza near the Student Union.
This free, public event will offer something of interest for virtually every member of the family, according to expo organizers.

CVC selects 19 finalists to compete for $75,000 May 1
Nineteen finalists for the Charlotte Venture Challenge (CVC) have been selected from among 95 entries, and one start-up company will receive the $25,000 grand prize as the winner of the 12th annual event on Wednesday, May 1. Category winners will share $50,000 in prize awards funded by the Hauser Family Fund.
Lectures by noted Caltech physicist, UNC Charlotte faculty part of N.C. Science Festival
April is North Carolina Science Festival time, and UNC Charlotte will hold a series of public lectures entitled “Research Journeys” to educate and inform the community about a variety of science topics.
Sean Caroll from the California Insitute of Technology (Caltech) will be the featured guest lecturer for the series. He will present “The Particle at the End of the Universe” at 7 p.m., Wednesday, April 10, in EPIC, Room G256.
