Criminal justice professor to discuss ‘Suicide by Cop’

Vivian Lord, a professor of criminal justice and criminology, will present “Suicide by Cop: Current Research and Implications for Law Enforcement Officers and Agencies” at 5 p.m., Tuesday, July 15, at the Belk Action Center at the Charlotte Chamber.
In this presentation, part of the UNC Charlotte Alumni Association Faculty Speaker Series, Lord will discuss real-world tactics that have been used successfully to resolve suicide-by-cop situations.

Architecture alumni to be named AIA Fellows

Melissa Farling and Alan McGuinn, alumni of the UNC Charlotte School of Architecture, will be named Fellows of the American Institute of Architects (AIA) at the organization’s national convention being held June 26-28 in Chicago. This AIA honor is bestowed upon architects who have made a significant contribution to architecture and society on a national level and who have achieved an exemplary standard of excellence in the profession.

UNC BOG recognizes Medal of Honor alumnus

The University of North Carolina Board of Governors recently recognized Kyle White (’13) on his being awarded the Medal of Honor.
During the BOG’s regular monthly meeting, White was presented a special commendation from the board. UNC Charlotte Chancellor Philip L. Dubois gave White a 49ers football signed by head coach Brad Lambert.
According to White, his goal as a Medal of Honor recipient is to work with returning service members to inform them of their educational opportunities through the GI bill.

Faces – Brenda Shue

Brenda Shue, a member of the Chancellor’s Office, is passionate about learning and the University.
At December commencement, where she graduated with a Master of Arts in Liberal Studies and a graduate certificate in technical and professional writing, Shue was chosen to ring the bell during the afternoon ceremony for her exemplary 49er spirit.

Former Charlotte 49ers men’s soccer all-America goalkeeper and 13-year MLS veteran Jon Busch is spearheading his fourth annual SAVES for SEALs campaign.
Busch, now in his fifth year with the MLS San Jose Earthquakes, started the SAVES for SEALs program four years ago with all proceeds going to the Navy SEAL Foundation to take care of families of the fallen.

Weeklong celebration planned for 50th anniversary of Cone University Center

The Bonnie E. Cone University Center will celebrate 50 years of campus life in November with a weeklong celebration of the facility’s historical significance and contemporary relevance to the University community with commemorative remarks, student performances, personal stories, educational exhibits, music, dance and other festivities.

Student Alumni Ambassadors celebrate 30 years of service

For the past 30 years, Student Alumni Ambassadors have welcomed thousands of visitors to UNC Charlotte at venues across the campus and in UNC Charlotte Center City. They are easy to recognize in their “49er Green” blazers.

University to honor King with three-day celebration, writer Omar Tyree to give keynote address

UNC Charlotte will commemorate the life, work and legacy of Martin Luther King Jr. with a three-day celebration that includes a keynote address by award-winning writer Omar Tyree, a day of service and a film screening.
The 2013 celebration theme is “A Dream Attained, Deferred or Abandoned? An Examination of the 50 Years Since the March on Washington.” Tyree will speak about this topic at 3:30 p.m., Tuesday, Jan. 22, in the Cone University Center, McKnight Hall.
