UNC Charlotte will celebrate Homecoming 2014 on Saturday, Oct. 25, as the 49ers take on James Madison University at noon in Richardson Stadium. The game will be broadcast on WCCB-TV in Charlotte.

A number of activities are scheduled leading up to the Homecoming game. They include:

The Office of Parent and Family Services and the Alumni Association invite Niner Nation family members to the 2014 Fall Family Festival on Saturday, Nov. 15.

“The Office of Parent and Family Services is excited for the Niner Nation family to have a second opportunity to attend a 49ers tailgate and football game,” said Kesha Williams, assistant director for parent and family services. “We are expecting an even bigger crowd then Family Weekend.” 

Steven Rogelberg, professor and director of UNC Charlotte’s Organizational Science program, will be the inaugural speaker for the UNC Charlotte Alumni Association’s Bonnie Cone Faculty Speaker Series “Nuggets of Knowledge.” 

The UNC Charlotte Homecoming Committee is extending a special invitation to faculty and staff to participate in its second football Homecoming Parade and Pep Rally to be held on Friday, Oct. 24.  Any campus department or group  that would like to walk, drive or float in the parade should register online at the Homecoming website by Friday, Sept. 26.

The Office of Parent and Family Services anticipates a large contingent of Niner Nation members at the annual Family Weekend, scheduled for Friday and Saturday, Sept. 26-27.
Registration for the event has been successful with the three family packages offered sold out; however, Kesha Williams, assistant director for parent and family services, noted tickets are still available for select activities.

Paul McDaniel, who completed a doctorate in geography and urban regional analysis from UNC Charlotte, has one of 11 Twitter accounts to follow on skilled immigration reform, according to the Consumer Electronics Association (CEA).
The association noted that McDaniel’s Twitter account offers a “well-curated view of state, national and international factors in the immigration reform debate.” His account was cited along with those of U.S. Senators Dick Durbin and Jeff Flake and N.Y. Times correspondent Julia Preston.

As Americans prepare to celebrate Independence Day, it is an opportunity to remember veterans like Kyle White (’13). He is one of many returning military veterans who have advanced their futures at UNC Charlotte following his service to the nation. Providing veterans educational opportunities is in the University’s DNA, beginning with its post-World War II founding to serve vets under the GI Bill.

Vivian Lord, a professor of criminal justice and criminology, will present “Suicide by Cop: Current Research and Implications for Law Enforcement Officers and Agencies” at 5 p.m., Tuesday, July 15, at the Belk Action Center at the Charlotte Chamber.
In this presentation, part of the UNC Charlotte Alumni Association Faculty Speaker Series, Lord will discuss real-world tactics that have been used successfully to resolve suicide-by-cop situations.

Melissa Farling and Alan McGuinn, alumni of the UNC Charlotte School of Architecture, will be named Fellows of the American Institute of Architects (AIA) at the organization’s national convention being held June 26-28 in Chicago. This AIA honor is bestowed upon architects who have made a significant contribution to architecture and society on a national level and who have achieved an exemplary standard of excellence in the profession.

The University of North Carolina Board of Governors recently recognized Kyle White (’13) on his being awarded the Medal of Honor.
During the BOG’s regular monthly meeting, White was presented a special commendation from the board. UNC Charlotte Chancellor Philip L. Dubois gave White a 49ers football signed by head coach Brad Lambert.
According to White, his goal as a Medal of Honor recipient is to work with returning service members to inform them of their educational opportunities through the GI bill.
