Awards and honors

A highlight of commencement is the recognition of individuals for exceptional and distinctive service to the University or the greater community through the awarding of an honorary degree from UNC Charlotte. The Faculty Honorary Degree Advisory Committee is seeking assistance in nominating persons for this honor.

The Center for Minorities and People with Disabilities in Information Technology (CMD-IT) is honoring Manuel Pérez Quiñones, associate dean for the College of Computing and Informatics, with the 2017 Richard Tapia Achievement Award for Scientific Scholarship, Civic Science and Diversity in Computing.

This award is bestowed annually to an individual who demonstrates significant leadership, commitment and contributions to diversifying computing.

Erik Saule, an assistant professor in the College of Computing and Informatics’ Department of Computer Science, has been awarded a prestigious National Science Foundation (NSF) Career Award for his research in graph analytics.

In the last two decades, graphs have been applied to virtually all parts of human activity, such as health, literature, national defense, GPS systems and traffic analysis for urban planning.

For a film that illustrates how the arts can promote healing in health care settings, UNC Charlotte researcher Margaret Quinlan and colleagues Lynn Harter and Evan Shaw have earned a regional Emmy nomination from the Ohio Valley Chapter of the National Academy of Television Arts and Sciences.

For humanitarian contributions to the field of industrial-organizational psychology, UNC Charlotte professor Steven Rogelberg was named the inaugural recipient of the Society of Industrial and Organizational Psychology Humanitarian Award.

In recognition of their exceptional teaching, Ashley Bryan, Nishi Bryska and Ian Marriott have received the College of Liberal Arts & Sciences’ Excellence in Teaching Awards for 2017.

John Ziegert, a faculty member in the Lee College of Engineering Mechanical Engineering and Engineering Science Department, is the 2017 recipient of the Frederick Taylor Research Medal, bestowed by SME (Society of Manufacturing Engineers).

The Taylor Research Medal honors significant published research leading to a better understanding of materials, facilities, principles, operations and their application to improve manufacturing processes.

Five UNC Charlotte staff members were honored with the Employee of the Year award during the annual Staff Recognition Luncheon held Wednesday, March 22, in the Popp Martin Student Union. The UNC Charlotte College of Education is officially home to one of the nation’s top foreign language teacher educators. The American Council on the Teaching of Foreign Languages (ACTFL) has selected Scott Kissau to receive the Anthony Papilia Award, an honor presented to one person annually for excellence in teacher education. The award recognizes a teacher, educator or author who has significantly influenced the lives of countless students and practicing teachers.

A team of four UNC Charlotte students was recognized with the People’s Choice Award in the 2016 Teradata University Network (TUN) Data Challenge, an international data analytics competition.

Laxmi Narayana Atluri, Sri Harsha Degala, Vrushali Sawant and Freddy Cabrera, all graduate students in data science and business analytics, demonstrated their findings at the 2016 Teradata PARTNERS Conference and Expo, and won the support of 3,500 of the world’s most advanced data and analytics experts and business leaders.
