CTL to hold mini-conference on active learning classrooms
Award-winning educator Bob Beichner from N.C. State University will be the guest speaker for the Center for Teaching and Learning’s “Midday Mini-conference: Active Learning Classrooms” scheduled for 11 a.m. to 2 p.m., Friday, April 8, in the Student Union, Room 340 A and B.

New fellowship program to better prepare Ph.D. students to teach
Applications for the Provost Doctoral Teaching Fellowship for the 2016-17 academic year are being accepted. This opportunity will introduce doctoral students to teaching practices used in higher education and better prepare them for careers in college-level teaching.
The Office of Academic Affairs and the Center for Teaching and Learning, in collaboration with the University’s doctoral programs and the Graduate School, are offering this fellowship. The deadline for Ph.D. students to apply is Monday, Feb. 15.
UNC Chapel Hill professor to lecture on how students learn
Todd Zakrajsek, executive director of the Academy of Educators, UNC School of Medicine, will present “How Students Learn: Strategies for Teaching Based on the New Science of Learning” at 2 p.m., Friday, Oct. 30, in the College of Health and Human Services, Room 376.
Zakrajsek, who also is an associate professor in the School of Medicine and the Department of Family Medicine at UNC Chapel Hill, is the author of “The New Science of Learning: How to Learn in Harmony with Your Brain.” The work was the Center for Teaching and Learning Common Read for the fall semester.
New learning community designed to support adjunct faculty
The Center for Teaching and Learning has launched a new professional learning community for adjunct instructors at the University. Its goal is to build community among the participants and provide pedagogical support, which will benefit the faculty members as well as their students.

Faculty members studying teaching and learning, SoTL grant period open
UNC Charlotte faculty members are actively engaged in the Scholarship of Teaching and Learning, the disciplinary, cross-disciplinary and interdisciplinary study of teaching practice and student learning.
The Division for Academic Affairs has supported Scholarship of Teaching and Learning (SoTL) through a grants program since 2009. Since its inception, the program has funded 32 faculty research projects across disciplines and colleges.
Redesigned calculus courses to enhance student success
Calculus courses are foundational for a number of majors, and a recently implemented redesign has created a fresh, modernized approach to the sequence.
Mohammad Kazemi, professor and associate chair of the Department of Mathematics and Statistics, said, “If students do well in Pre-calculus and Calculus I and II, then they can proceed and do well in a number of other disciplines, such as biology, pre-med, chemistry, physics, math, of course, geology, engineering and computer science.”
Faculty academy to write book on student success
Providing instruction to help first-year and transfer students succeed academically is the focus of the Top 40 Academy, formed in collaboration with the Center for Teaching and Learning.
