With the start of the new academic year quickly approaching, I want to share with you some updates about the work we have been doing over the past several weeks and what you can expect in the coming semester.

University Convocation to begin new academic year

University Convocation, the annual event that marks the beginning of a new academic year, is scheduled for 9:30 a.m., Thursday, Aug. 15, in Cone University Center, McKnight Hall.

Three local leaders to join UNC Charlotte’s Board of Trustees, three board members reappointed

Bank of America’s Christine Katziff and alumnus David Mildenberg were appointed to the UNC Charlotte Board of Trustees by the UNC Board of Governors, and Carlos E. Sanchez of AT&T North Carolina was named to the board by the N.C. General Assembly. Their four-year terms begin July 1.

Current trustees Sharon Decker and Susan DeVore were reappointed to second four-year terms by the UNC BOG, and the legislature also reappointed Fred Klein.

Hornets executive receives Distinguished Service Award

Fred Whitfield, president and chief operating officer for the Hornets Sports & Entertainment, is the 2019 recipient of the UNC Charlotte Distinguished Service Award.

Groundbreaking for Veterans Park scheduled

The UNC Charlotte Veteran Services Office will host a groundbreaking ceremony for a new Veterans Park at 9:30 a.m., Monday, May 27.

Christopher Orr ’18 conceived Veterans Park to recognize UNC Charlotte’s historical connections to veteran students and to honor all past, present and future veterans who would attend or work at the University. UNC Charlotte was founded in 1946 as the Charlotte Center in part to provide educational opportunities to veterans who returned from World War II.

Graduation marked by celebration and commemoration

Thunderous ovations filled Halton Arena during Commencement, and while the tumult celebrated the academic achievements of the graduates, the loudest acclaim Saturday was reserved for the families of Reed Parlier and Riley Howell.
