2015 MLK Celebration to feature National Urban League president
National Urban League president Marc Morial will give the keynote speech for the University’s celebration of the life, work and legacy of Martin Luther King Jr. at 3:30 p.m., Tuesday, Jan. 20, in the Cone University Center, McKnight Hall.
Morial’s free, public talk “Building Bridges Through Civility, Justice and Action” is sponsored by the UNC Charlotte Multicultural Resource Center. A community reception will follow in the Lucas Room.
Faces – Tina Dadio
Tina Dadio’s mantra for all University employees is “when in doubt contact the Office of Legal Affairs.”
Dadio is the University public records officer and a paralegal, and during her five years on campus, she’s experienced a different work environment from that of being a paralegal in the for-profit world.
Mobile mammography unit coming to campus
The Charlotte Radiology Breast Center’s mobile mammography unit will be on campus from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m., Wednesday, Dec. 17, in the loading dock area behind the Barnhardt Student Activity Center.
Members of the campus community can schedule an appointment with the unit by calling 704-367-2232, ext. 6241. The Advisory Committee to the Chancellor for Employee Health and Wellness is coordinating this event.
Staff Council to create ‘Golden Nugget Award’
UNC Charlotte recognizes employees through various teaching awards and the Employee of the Year Awards; however, the UNC Charlotte Staff Council is creating a new honor to celebrate workers’ “everyday” efforts to exceed job expectations.
University to award 3,300 degrees at Dec. 13 commencement, 81-year-old among the graduates
Commencement ceremonies celebrate the completion of one’s educational journey – no matter how long it may take. This is especially true for one UNC Charlotte graduate at fall commencement Saturday, Dec. 13.
Barbara Coberly, 81, will be among the roughly 3,320 students who will gather with family, friends and others in Halton Arena to receive their undergraduate, master’s or doctoral degrees.
University formally dedicates Martin Hall, former governor talks ‘Intersection of Science and Religion’
At UNC Charlotte, buildings are named for people who have dedicated their lives to the betterment of the state, and former Gov. Jim Martin qualifies, said UNC Charlotte Chancellor Philip L. Dubois at a dedication ceremony for Martin Hall Thursday, Nov. 20.
Faculty and staff Giving Green contributions top $180,000
University leaders lauded the campus’ community of givers whose Giving Green contributions and pledges totaled $181,395.27 for this year’s annual campaign.
Chancellor Philip L. Dubois, speaking at the donor appreciation breakfast, noted employees’ generosity will enhance the work of the Arts & Science Council, agencies affiliated with the State Employees Combine Campaign and the UNC Charlotte Foundation.
Giving Green campaign co-chair Darin Spease, senior associate athletic director, echoed the chancellor.
Chancellor awarded honorary degree from Kingston University
Chancellor Philip L. Dubois recently received an honorary Doctor of Arts from Kingston University, located in London, England.
In presenting the honorary degree, Julius Weinberg, professor and vice chancellor at Kingston University, noted it was in recognition of the chancellor’s “outstanding contribution to internationalism, specifically to acknowledge the depth and value of the partnership between Kingston University and UNC Charlotte over the past 30 years, which has enhanced the academic life of so many students and staff across both institutions.”
Atkins Library location for Faculty/Staff Social
Faculty and staff members are invited to join colleagues for socializing and networking at a Faculty and Staff Social, which will be from 4:30 to 6:30 p.m., Wednesday, Nov. 19, in the Dale Halton Reading Room of the J. Murrey Atkins Library.
Sponsored by Chancellor Philip L. Dubois, the social will feature light hors d’oeuvres, wine, beer and soft drinks.
Faculty/staff walking groups forming
The Advisory Committee to the Chancellor for Employee Health and Wellness (ACCEHW) is coordinating walking groups for faculty and staff members for the remainder of the fall semester.
The groups will meet at noon, Tuesdays; 12:30 p.m., Wednesdays; and 9 a.m., Thursdays; under the clock tower at the Barnhardt Student Activity Center.
According to organizers, the walks are designed to be an hour, but participants can return to work at any time. The routes will vary based upon the participants each day.
