Illinois State professor to talk about urban regionalism

Alan Lessoff, professor of history, Illinois State University, will present “Where Texas Meets the Sea: Corpus Christi, A Case Study in Southern and Southwestern Urban Regionalism” at 3:30 p.m., Monday, Feb. 15, in Fretwell Building, Room 114.

Lessoff was named the spring 2016 Obama Fellow at the Transnational Institute for American Studies at the Johannes Gutenberg University in Mainz, Germany.

International festival to premiere film about Cold War experiences of University’s ‘eyewitness-in-residence’

A documentary that recounts the Cold War struggles of Mario Röllig, UNC Charlotte’s “College of Liberal Arts & Sciences eyewitness-in-residence,” will premiere during the 66th annual Berlin International Film Festival in mid-February. The documentary includes scenes filmed during a visit Röllig made to UNC Charlotte in 2014.

University to host ‘Women + Video Games Festival’

UNC Charlotte will host a Women + Video Games Festival Monday through Sunday, Feb. 15-21. Through a series of workshops, lectures, panel discussions and video screenings, the festival will encourage women and girls to explore game design and programming and to promote a creative gaming culture that is inclusive of individuals, regardless of gender, race or creed.

Communication studies professor to explore the rise of the Panthers

While the Carolina Panthers are preparing to compete in Super Bowl 50; Daniel Grano, associate professor in the Department of Communication Studies, will lead a discussion about the team’s near-perfect season and its place in the National Football League (NFL). This talk is set for noon, Friday, Feb. 5, at the Bechtler Museum of Modern Art.

Lunch-and-learn to focus on orchid care

“Orchid Care 101,” a lunch-and-learn event sponsored by the Botanical Gardens, will provide tips on growing these fascinating, beautiful plants.

Attendees should bring their lunch and join John Denti, orchid curator, as he provides instructions on how to care for several common types of orchids from noon to 1 p.m., Thursday, Feb. 11, in the McMillan Greenhouse classroom. Email Paula Gross (pmgross@uncc.edu) to reserve a spot.

Annual Valentine’s Orchid Sale scheduled

The University Botanical Gardens’ annual Valentine’s Orchid Sale will be 9 a.m. to 3 p.m., Thursday through Saturday, Feb. 11-13, at the McMillan Greenhouse.

This yearly event is a popular one with the community, according to Paula Gross, assistant director of the Botanical Gardens.

“During the sale, we invite you to stroll through the McMillan Greenhouse to soak in the warmth and fragrance of our display collections, ask questions of the experts, then choose from a select variety of healthy blooming orchids well-suited to the home environment.”

Cancer researcher featured in Charlotte Observer

Pinku Mukherjee, the Belk Endowed Professor of Cancer Research, was profiled recently in the Charlotte Observer. The story highlights a faculty researcher who is staking her claim at UNC Charlotte and making an exponential impact in the field of cancer research. Mukherjee is the 2015 recipient of the O. Max Gardner Award, the UNC system’s highest faculty honor.
