Alum’s research provides geographic lens into COVID-19 pandemic

Michael Desjardins ’16 M.A. ’19 Ph.D. said the training he received in the geography program at UNC Charlotte led him to a dream position at Johns Hopkins University.“I wouldn’t want to get the training anywhere else,” said Desjardins, a postdoctoral fellow in epidemiology at Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health, of his studies at UNC Charlotte. “I’m extremely happy with my advisors, the friends I’ve made, the support from other professors, the classes I took. All of that led to me being at Johns Hopkins, which was a dream.”

Architecture students’ 9 predictions for the future resulting from COVID-19

When the coronavirus pandemic hit in the middle of the spring semester, it added a new layer of significance to the assignments in Assistant Professor of Architectural History Lidia Klein’s spring seminar. The curriculum for the graduate course, “Architecture and Production: From Assembly Line to 3-D Printing,” challenged students to investigate “changes in methods of architectural production from the 19th century to the present,” placing those changes “within social, political, cultural and economic contexts.”

Alumnus, staff member produces ‘quarantine concerts’

Working from home this spring, in his position as senior research administrator of invoicing in Grants and Contracts Administration at UNC Charlotte, Zack Tarlton ’13 started playing piano during his lunch hour. While his academic training is in architecture, Tarlton has a long history in musical theatre.“I basically grew up at Matthews Playhouse,” he said. As a student at UNC Charlotte, he managed to sneak away from his desk in Storrs to perform in the Department of Theatre production of “The 25th Annual Putnam County Spelling Bee.”

Race is shaping how Americans experience the coronavirus pandemic, as do wealth and the systemic disparities that have led to a racial wealth gap in many parts of the United States. If you lack wealth, you are more likely to suffer the pandemic’s harshest outcomes. 

Art students use animation to teach virus safety

Students in Professor Heather Freeman’s animation class have created short animated videos that encourage personal hygiene to prevent the spread of COVID-19. The students’ advice was drawn directly from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) and addresses topics such as proper hand washing, maintaining six feet of distance, disinfecting surfaces and caring for someone who is sick.
