UNC Charlotte offers condolences in wake of Orlando tragedy
Flags across campus will remain at half-staff through Thursday in observance of the tragedy in Orlando.

We reaffirm the special role of our public university to prepare well-rounded, lifelong learners who will lead in our communities and advance the ideals of diversity and inclusiveness, civil discourse and the peaceful resolution of conflict.

Campus leads in building ‘culture of reporting’
UNC Charlotte is leading nationally in proactively educating students about sexual assaults and providing them resources for reporting and receiving support and assistance. Recent media coverage has noted an increase in reports of sexual assaults based on federal data. While significant, this increase in reports strongly suggests that the University’s education efforts are working.

University responds to students displaced from off-campus apartment complex
UNC Charlotte is working with the management of Arcadia Student Living, a private, non-University apartment complex, to assist the roughly 90 student residents who were asked to relocate in order for engineers to evaluate structural issues in a building.
The University’s Housing and Residence Life Office has prepared six available spaces on campus for Arcadia residents who need temporary housing due to the structural issues that are displacing them involuntarily.

Student Union to display study abroad photography
Students who participate in study abroad trips through the University could submit their photographs from overseas for the annual “Study Abroad Photo Exhibit.”
Winners and honorable mentions in this competition will be displayed Sunday, May 1, through Saturday, May 14, in the Student Union Art Gallery. An opening reception for the display will be from 5 to 7 p.m., Wednesday, May 4.

Exhibit curated by MRC staffer wins second prize in national competition
“Publicly Identified: Coming Out Activist in the Queen City,” curated by Joshua Burford, assistant director for sexual and gender diversity for the Multicultural Resource Center, received the second place honorable mention in the 2016 Allan Bérubé Prize.
Presented annually, the Bérubé Prize recognizes outstanding work in public or community-based lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender and/or queer history. Work from the previous two years is eligible for the honor.

UNC Charlotte’s Voices of Eden Gospel Choir shares gift of music
The student group Voices of Eden Gospel Choir recently completed its spring semester tour with concerts in Winston-Salem and Greenville, N.C., and Richmond, Norfolk and Suffolk, Va. The group will be featured in concert at Mission Gathering Charlotte at 10 a.m., Sunday, April 10.
In Richmond, the choir sang at a nursing home and visited with residents; the performance was part of its established tradition to uplift the campus and community through sharing its gift of music.

Exceptional role models recognized at International Women’s Day
Offering odes to strong women who inspired them was a common thread by speakers at the recent International Women’s Day program held in the Student Union Multipurpose Room.
An annual event, International Women’s Day “acknowledges that our campus community is filled with local women who embody the richness of internationalism, and we would like to recognize these individuals for their contributions to UNC Charlotte and the world,” said Roslyn Lewis, communications coordinator in the Office of International Programs.

Resiliency subject of Counseling Center talks
The Counseling Center will sponsor talks at 6:30 p.m., Wednesdays, April 13 and 27, in the Student Union Movie Theatre.
Each event will feature two speakers with aspects of resiliency as a focus of the talks; these events are free to students, faculty, staff and the public. For students, these workshops are Wellness Passport events.

Annual ‘Take Back the Night’ to support survivors, raise awareness
Women and men can be affected by sexual and/or intimate partner violence. To provide a safe, supportive space for individuals who have experienced such violence, as well as a learning opportunity to educate others how to help
