The University’s Environmental Health and Safety Office, in partnership will the Charlotte Fire Department, Sigma Tau Gamma and the student group Fire and Safety Technologists, will hold a fire safety event at 4 p.m., Tuesday, Oct. 22, on the front recreational fields near Moore Residence Hall.
The event will be a simulated fire of a residence hall room. Organizers will demonstrate the difference that occurs when a fire starts in a room that is equipped with sprinklers versus one without sprinklers.

The Office of Women’s Programs is sponsoring an exhibit of paintings by Erika Clarke to generate awareness about October being Relationship Violence Awareness Month. The display will be through Friday, Nov. 1, on the second floor of the Student Union.
The Domestic Violence Art Exhibit features seven acrylic paintings by Clarke. The works attempt to give the audience a real look at the effect of domestic violence.

The University’s inaugural Homecoming game is Saturday, Oct. 12, and the UNC Charlotte Habitat for Humanity Campus Chapter is realizing its goal to construct a home for a deserving family. Students, faculty, staff, alumni and members of the community have joined together for this first-ever, on-campus Habitat build that is underway at the corner of University City Boulevard and John Kirk Drive.

The Multicultural Resource Center and Time Out Youth are joining forces to host the Carolina Conference on Queer Youth. This free, public event will be from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m., Friday, Oct. 18, in the Student Union.  
A first-of-its-kind event for the state, the Carolina Conference on Queer Youth will unite college students, high school and middle school students, teachers, counselors and other practitioners who work with the LGBTQ community to start conversations about how to increase visibility in the community, said organizers.

Former Gov. Jim Hunt recently discussed the significance of investing in public education to North Carolina economic future in his remarks as part of the Distinguished Speaker Series. He was on campus to attend a dedication ceremony for Hunt Hall, the first suite option in the new South Village residential area. It is named in honor of the former governor.

The Multicultural Resource Center (MRC) encourages the campus community to celebrate the life and work of LGBTQ people on National Coming Out Day during a celebration from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m., Friday, Oct. 11, in the Student Union Rotunda.
Students will have the opportunity to tell their own stories about coming out and to collect those stories to be included in the LGBTQ Community Archive at UNC Charlotte. Individuals who want to show their support of the LGBTQ community can sign a banner to hang in the Student Union following the event.

October is Relationship Violence Awareness Month, and the University’s is sponsoring its annual Clothesline Project to raise awareness. Members of the campus community will have the chance to paint T-shirts with powerful messages relating to relationship and domestic violence from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m., Wednesday, Oct. 9,  at the Belk Tower.
Women’s Programs and the Center for Wellness Promotion are sponsoring this event, which is open to all students and faculty. Paint and shirts will be provided.

The Center for Wellness Promotion will host its sixth annual OctSoberfest from 4 to 7 p.m., Wednesday, Oct. 9, on the front recreational fields, to kick off National Collegiate Alcohol Awareness Month.
OctSoberfest is a wellness carnival-style program to educate students on the realities of alcohol consumption through various alcohol-free activities. There will be a a number of activities, including a drunk driving simulation, mock sobriety testing, cornhole, home run derby and gladiator jousting. Music, free food and beverages and giveaways will be provided too.

Nick Swardson and David Koechner will perform at 8 p.m., Thursday, Oct. 10, in the Student Union Multipurpose Room, as part of the Homecoming Comedy Show sponsored by the Campus Activities Board. Doors will open at 7:30 p.m.
Swardson, a comedian, actor and writer/producer, has appeared in “Grandma’s Boy,” Grown Ups,” “I Now Pronounce You Chuck and Larry” and “Blades of Glory.” In addition, he has performed on Comedy Central shows “Pretend Time with Nick Swardson.” Currently, he is working on the animated show “CHOZEN.”

The Charlotte 49ers inaugural football season is underway, and Niner spirit is at an all-time high leading up to celebrations and activities planned for the Oct. 12 Homecoming game against UNC Pembroke.
