The group Step Afrika! will perform at 7 p.m., Friday, Nov. 22, in the Student Union Multipurpose Room.
A professional stepping company, Step Afrika! blends dance styles practiced by historically African American fraternities and sororities, African traditional dance and other dance and art forms. Through these dances, Step Afrika! promotes stepping as an educational tool for young people, focusing on teamwork, academic achievement and cross-cultural understanding.

The Student Union Art Gallery is exhibiting the two-person display “Secret Lives of the Inanimate,” which features the works of alumni Rachel Simpson and Andrea Vail through Nov. 26.
“Secret Lives of the Inanimate” investigates the world through a unique lens by focusing on moments of interaction between objects and their environment. Pieces in the exhibit include a combination of altered found objects and photographic transfers that explore the interesting and odd in everyday objects.
Simpson said her works seek to explore “objects in the world and how they got there.”

The Office of Parent and Family Services in the Division for Student Affairs has invited parents and family members to campus for a Fall Family Festival on Saturday, Nov. 9.
Attendees will participate in a wide variety of events, including a pre-football game tailgate with the Alumni Association and a viewing party to watch the Charlotte 49ers take on the Wesley College Wolverines.

Recast as an open house, “A-Cone-A-Fair” makes a special return from 2 to 4 p.m., Wednesday, Nov. 6, throughout the Cone University Center to commemorate the building’s 50th anniversary.  The event will highlight Cone Center’s history of student dedication, featuring historical exhibits and displays alongside the current student services that reside in the building.

The Bonnie E. Cone University Center will celebrate 50 years of campus life in November with a weeklong celebration of the facility’s historical significance and contemporary relevance to the University community with commemorative remarks, student performances, personal stories, educational exhibits, music, dance and other festivities.

The University’s Environmental Health and Safety Office, in partnership will the Charlotte Fire Department, Sigma Tau Gamma and the student group Fire and Safety Technologists, will hold a fire safety event at 4 p.m., Tuesday, Oct. 22, on the front recreational fields near Moore Residence Hall.
The event will be a simulated fire of a residence hall room. Organizers will demonstrate the difference that occurs when a fire starts in a room that is equipped with sprinklers versus one without sprinklers.

The Office of Women’s Programs is sponsoring an exhibit of paintings by Erika Clarke to generate awareness about October being Relationship Violence Awareness Month. The display will be through Friday, Nov. 1, on the second floor of the Student Union.
The Domestic Violence Art Exhibit features seven acrylic paintings by Clarke. The works attempt to give the audience a real look at the effect of domestic violence.

The University’s inaugural Homecoming game is Saturday, Oct. 12, and the UNC Charlotte Habitat for Humanity Campus Chapter is realizing its goal to construct a home for a deserving family. Students, faculty, staff, alumni and members of the community have joined together for this first-ever, on-campus Habitat build that is underway at the corner of University City Boulevard and John Kirk Drive.

The Multicultural Resource Center and Time Out Youth are joining forces to host the Carolina Conference on Queer Youth. This free, public event will be from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m., Friday, Oct. 18, in the Student Union.  
A first-of-its-kind event for the state, the Carolina Conference on Queer Youth will unite college students, high school and middle school students, teachers, counselors and other practitioners who work with the LGBTQ community to start conversations about how to increase visibility in the community, said organizers.

Former Gov. Jim Hunt recently discussed the significance of investing in public education to North Carolina economic future in his remarks as part of the Distinguished Speaker Series. He was on campus to attend a dedication ceremony for Hunt Hall, the first suite option in the new South Village residential area. It is named in honor of the former governor.
