Housing and Residence Life recognized for diversity/inclusion efforts
UNC Charlotte’s Office of Housing and Residence Life recently received the inaugural Assessment and Impact Award presented by Skyfactor Benchworks at the Association of College and University Housing Officers-International Conference and Expo in Toronto, Canada.
Skyfactor Benchworks, which provides student affairs and academic assessments to colleges and universities, praised the University’s Housing and Residence Life (HRL) team for its educational programming on issues of diversity and inclusion.
An expression of appreciation: ‘Hands for Our Heroes’
One student’s idea recently sparked a chain of kindness on campus. Wanting to show appreciation for campus heroes in Police and Public Safety (PPS) and Emergency Management, a student in the Collegiate Recovery Community had the idea to make and deliver care packages to the two departments.
Faces – Brian Holcomb
As assistant director for trips for Venture Outdoor Leadership, Brian Holcomb is fulfilling a passion to share nature with others; his goal is to provide outdoor adventure experiences that enable members of the campus community and those in the greater Charlotte region to develop as individuals and as members of a team and to become inspired by the outdoors.
University Recreation Center slated for mid-fall opening
The University Recreation Center, scheduled to open during the upcoming fall semester, will respond to UNC Charlotte’s growing demand for dedicated student recreation and fitness space.
Groundbreaking for Veterans Park scheduled
The UNC Charlotte Veteran Services Office will host a groundbreaking ceremony for a new Veterans Park at 9:30 a.m., Monday, May 27.
Christopher Orr ’18 conceived Veterans Park to recognize UNC Charlotte’s historical connections to veteran students and to honor all past, present and future veterans who would attend or work at the University. UNC Charlotte was founded in 1946 as the Charlotte Center in part to provide educational opportunities to veterans who returned from World War II.
Vice Chancellor of Student Affairs issues message on GPSG independence from SGA
Dear Niner Nation,
I want to share news of the vote earlier this spring to separate the Graduate & Professional Student Government (GPSG) from the Student Government Association (SGA).
During the spring 2019 SGA elections, Referendum 3 on the ballot asked “Do you accept the GPSG Independence Act, which would separate the Graduate & Professional Student Government from the Student Government Association?” 91 percent of student voters responded “Yes.”
Maikranz Student Media Award established in honor of long-time adviser
In recognition of his 33 years of service to UNC Charlotte, Wayne Maikranz, director of Student Niner Media, was honored with the establishment of a student media award in his name.

Faces – Larry Gourdine
Larry Gourdine, associate dean and director of Student Assistance and Support Services (SASS), understands firsthand the barriers that many students face at UNC Charlotte.
Students can experience nonacademic stressors that affect their social or academic performances. Pressure to graduate with straight A’s or even to graduate at all can feel like an impossible feat. Some students, for example, admit to working more than 60 hours a week, facing financial issues and at times interpersonal concerns.
Final call for Gold Rush campus partner submissions
Campus units that have an event or program occurring between Aug. 16-25 that they would like included in fall 2019 Gold Rush (formerly Week of Welcome) should submit them by May 10.
