UNC Charlotte’s Air Force ROTC Detachment 592 is a commissioning program and leadership training program centered around the college experience. Cadets are students first, focused on academic excellence. In addition, they participate in classes and training sessions to hone their leadership and management skills. And upon graduation, they are commissioned as a Second Lieutenant in the US Air Force or US Space Force.

Looking for a unique way to spend spring break? Alternative Service Break is a volunteer experience during which students forgo their traditional spring break activities and engage in direct service to a community beyond their own. 

The “49ers” moniker has an interesting — and scrappy — origin.

UNC Charlotte students celebrated a ribbon-cutting for the 49th Acre, a three-acre student outdoor event venue and tailgate park, Saturday, Sept. 16.

Mariah Manley wasn’t planning on getting an internship last summer, especially after her first year in college. The Honors College student knew that it was difficult for freshmen like herself to receive summer internships, and she planned on working hard her freshman year so she could enjoy her summer. There would be time for internships when she became an upperclassman.

Manley is majoring in health systems management  with a minor in public health and Spanish. She plans to graduate in May 2025 and eventually work in the management side of a hospital or a clinic. 

Prashant Jha’s dream is to become an medical oncologist. After a lengthy application and interview process, he was one of two undergraduates chosen to work with Ludmila Prokunina-Olsson at the National Cancer Institute last summer. 

There’s no (pit) stopping Lauren Allsbrook from achieving her goals and speeding toward a bright future. A senior communications major, Allsbrook achieved one of 37 spots in the country to be part of the 22nd NASCAR Diversity Internship Program this past summer — a 10-week opportunity for hands-on experience in a variety of fields within the motorsports industry.

UNC Charlotte’s campus is home to a piece of 9/11 history, helping the community honor the nearly 3,000 lives lost 22 years ago at the World Trade Center, Pentagon and aboard United Airlines Flight 93.
A steel section from Tower One of the World Trade Center, located outside of Duke Centennial Hall, provides opportunities for reflection and remembrance in honor of 9/11. The column, dedicated on Sept. 11, 2006, was donated to The William States Lee College of Engineering and the Department of Civil Engineering by the D.H. Griffin Wrecking Company.

One reason Kenan Moore chose UNC Charlotte was because he knew the Belk College of Business would be a good fit. He was seeking opportunities to build his network and grow as an individual. This past summer, the senior marketing major exponentially increased his professional network as an intern at Bank of America. What was your role at Bank of America? What types of projects did you work on?

When Richard Amon, vice chancellor for business affairs, considered the blank walls that greet guests in the recently-renovated fourth floor of Reese, he saw a collaborative opportunity to liven up the space, showcase his staff and involve students. Wheels churning, he contacted the Department of Art and Art History with an idea to create a mural to cover the walls.
