Skillen named chair of Music Department
Joseph Skillen will become the next chair of the Department of Music, effective July 1. He comes to UNC Charlotte after 22 years at Louisiana State University, where he has served in numerous capacities, most recently as the Galante Endowed Professor of Tuba and Euphonium and associate dean for graduate studies in music and theatre in the College of Music and Dramatic Arts.
Minnesota’s Brownell to lead School of Architecture
Effective July 1, Blaine Brownell will become the new director of the School of Architecture (SoA) in UNC Charlotte’s College of Arts + Architecture. Brownell will come to the University from the University of Minnesota’s School of Architecture, where he is professor and interim head and has served as director of graduate studies and interim director of the Master of Science in Architecture-Sustainable Design Program.
Student and temporary employee payroll are now biweekly
UNC Charlotte made a big change in when certain employees get paid. As a complement to work by the Student Success Working Group (SSWG), over the last year, Financial Services and Human Resources have worked to transition the student and temporary employee payroll from monthly to biweekly. Now, employees who use Web Time Entry (WTE) will be paid every two weeks instead of only once a month. Laura Williams, UNC Charlotte’s controller, said the change has been a long time coming because of the impact it could have on student success.

Help beautify campus, plant a tree
Members of the campus community can participate in two scheduled tree plantings Thursday, March 19, as part of the University’s Earth Semester activities.The first tree planting is from 9 to 10 a.m. at Martin Hall; the second will be from 1 to 2 p.m. at South Village Crossing. RSVPs are requested.
Broome, Gray named deputy Title IX coordinators
Pamela Broome and Lee Gray recently were named deputy Title IX coordinators for Niner University Elementary and Academic Affairs, respectively, within the University’s Title IX Office.
Curlee wins Staff Council Cook-off
Regina Curlee, Financial Services, won the recent Staff Council Soup and Cornbread Cook-off with her Brunswick stew recipe. Jessica Deal, Facilities Management, and Ken Field, Auxiliary Services, placed second and third, respectively.Curlee’s dish was named fan favorite by cook-off attendees who also selected cornbread by Dannie Mirovich (Parking and Transportation Services) and decorations by Ali Dubois and Rebecca Deyo (University Advancement) as the best.
Dempsey needs shared leave
Reginald Dempsey, Building Environmental Services, needs shared leave donations. Meggs to lead Women + Girls Research Alliance
Michelle Meggs is the new executive director of the Women + Girls Research Alliance (W+GRA), an organization that works collaboratively with faculty, students and the community to provide opportunities for research and education on policy issues affecting women.Meggs, whose diverse background includes work in academia, the nonprofit sector and ministry, envisions the W+GRA becoming the place for scholars across the state and nation to come together to advance gender equity and social mobility.
