IST program achieves second Quality Matters certification
The Instructional Systems Technology Program recently received its second Quality Matters (QM) program certification. This new recognition is for Online Learner Success. UNC Charlotte is the second institution to receive this individual certification, since the introduction of QM program certification in 2015.
Personally Speaking series to tackle ‘true crime’
The book “Goat Castle: A True Story of Murder, Race and the Gothic South” has a murder, a dowager of fading “Southern aristocracy,” two eccentrics living with goats in a decaying mansion, conspiracy, racism and injustice. On Tuesday, Feb. 19, author Karen Cox will give a public presentation about her book as part of the Personally Speaking series.
Botanical Gardens to hold annual Orchid Sale
Orchids have a long history of being associated with love, which makes them a perfect gift for Valentine’s Day.
The 2019 Botanical Gardens Orchid Sale, scheduled for Saturday, Feb. 9, through Thursday, Feb. 14, is an opportunity to purchase one or more of these elegant flowers. Orchids will range in price from $10 to $25. Sale hours coincide with the greenhouse’s normal operating hours.

Register for the 2019 Gold Rush 5K Run/Walk
The 17th annual 49er Gold Rush 5K Run/Walk, hosted by UNC Charlotte University Recreation, will be Saturday, Feb. 2. The event begins at 9:30 a.m. at Belk Gym.
As the second race in the Healthy UCity Race Series, the UNC Charlotte 49er Gold Rush 5K Run/Walk, Virtual Race and Fun Run is open to everyone. Current UNC Charlotte students with a valid 49er ID who register by the early bird deadline will receive a student discount. Faculty/staff, alumni and community members are encouraged to participate.
49ers4Life Blood Drive expands to two days
The 2019 49ers4Life Blood Drive is a two-day affair, and campus organizers and sponsors anticipate this change will enable the University to reach its goal of 1,000 pints of blood collected. This year’s drive, which is being held in conjunction with the American Red Cross, will be from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m., Tuesday and Wednesday, Jan. 29-30, in the Barnhardt Student Activity Center.
Online nursing programs rise in national rankings
The UNC Charlotte School of Nursing’s online master’s programs jumped 13 spots in the 2019 U.S. News & World Report rankings and remain in the top 50 percent of programs nationally. The programs ascended to 62 in the national rankings, up from 75 last year.
Queens University professor to kick off 2019 Great Decisions series
Alexa Royden, associate professor in the Department of Political Science and Sociology at Queens University, will present “Cyber Conflict and Geopolitics” at 6:30 p.m., Wednesday, Jan. 30, at UNC Charlotte Center City. This presentation is the first in the University’s 2019 Great Decisions Lecture Series.
Local civil rights pioneer to deliver keynote address at annual MLK Celebration
Dorothy Counts-Scoggins was among the first African American students to integrate Harding High School in 1957. Now, more than 60 years later, she will discuss this historic moment as the keynote speaker for UNC Charlotte’s annual Martin Luther King Jr. Celebration.
Call for alumni award nominations
The UNC Charlotte Alumni Association is actively seeking nominations for its 2019 awards class. The deadline to submit a nomination for this year is Friday, Jan. 25.
