The extended UNC Charlotte community joins with institutions and individuals across the nation and around the world in support of the victims of Sunday’s tragedy, their families and the people of Orlando.

We reaffirm the special role of our public university to prepare well-rounded, lifelong learners who will lead in our communities and advance the ideals of diversity and inclusiveness, civil discourse and the peaceful resolution of conflict.

Alumnus’s project reimagines historic Brooklyn neighborhood

Although Lindsey McAlpine (‘90) was pursuing a double major in business and psychology at UNC Charlotte, he always knew real estate development would play an outsized role in his professional future.

“I was actively working in real estate and anxious to go out in the business world,” he recalled. “I started my first development company between my junior and senior year in college.”

Learn more about Belk College graduate programs

UNC Charlotte employees can learn more about graduate programs offered by the Belk College of Business at an information session scheduled for noon to 1 p.m., Wednesday, July 27, in Friday Building, Room 142.

Details on academics and admissions will be provided, and a representative from human resources will discuss tuition benefits.

A free boxed lunch will be provided individuals who RSVP in advance.

UNC Charlotte students participate in Graduate Education Day

Two UNC Charlotte students recently represented the University at North Carolina’s Graduate Education Day, which was held at the N.C. General Assembly in Raleigh.

Marcus Lawrence, a doctoral student in biology, and Alexandra Hurst, a master’s student in chemistry, joined other graduate students from across the state at this event, which provides a platform for them to showcase their research and its impact on the state of North Carolina. Legislators met with students and faculty members to learn more about various research being conducted at North Carolina universities.

Campus leads in building ‘culture of reporting’

UNC Charlotte is leading nationally in proactively educating students about sexual assaults and providing them resources for reporting and receiving support and assistance. Recent media coverage has noted an increase in reports of sexual assaults based on federal data. While significant, this increase in reports strongly suggests that the University’s education efforts are working.

University-produced video wins CASE’s Bronze Circle of Excellence

The Council for Advancement and Support of Education has recognized UNC Charlotte with an international Bronze Circle of Excellence Award in the news and research video category for a segment about the University’s archaeological excavation at Mount Zion.

Three Charlotte 49ers football games on C-USA TV schedule

Conference USA has released its preliminary TV schedule for the 2016 football season, and it currently includes three Charlotte 49ers road games.

Charlotte’s season-opener at Louisville will be televised by the ACC Regional Sports Network. The 49ers game at Marshall will be televised nationally by first-year C-USA TV partner beIN Sports, and the 49ers road game at the University of Southern Mississippi will be televised by the American Sports Network (ASN). 

Theatre professor publishes new young adult thriller

Andrew Hartley, Robinson Distinguished Professor of Shakespeare in the Department of Theatre, has written a new fantasy-adventure-mystery for young adult readers. “Steeplejack: A Novel” will be released by Tor Teen on June 14.

Set in 19th-century South Africa, the book has received glowing reviews, particularly for its young female protagonist. The monthly book review publication BookPage named it the “Top Teen Pick” for June 2016. Steeplejack is the first book in a series of three.

Music student to attend Philadelphia Orchestra camp

Music student Ben Shafer was accepted for Music House, an international music festival hosted by the Philadelphia Orchestra. This intensive training program, held on the campus of Bryn Mawr College in Pennsylvania from June 15 through July 1, provides college students and young professionals the opportunity to work directly with musicians of the Philadelphia Orchestra in private lessons, master classes, seminars and orchestral rehearsals and performances.

Trio selected as fellows for national online learning leadership program

Shanna Coles, Florence Martin and Heather McCullough have been selected as 2016 fellows for the Institute of Emerging Leadership in Online Learning (IELOL), a leadership development program sponsored by the UNC Online Learning Consortium and Penn State University.

This program, which is in its eighth year, will enable fellows to work with colleagues from around the world and join a growing network of higher education leaders. IELOL fellows are selected through an application process and sponsored by their home institution.
