Second Charlotte Dance Marathon raises $49,000 for Levine Children’s Hospital
In a demonstration of community engagement, more than 600 UNC Charlotte students danced the night away recently in support of the Levine Children’s Hospital. The marathon capped a number of fundraising events across campus that raised $49,015.
University to observe International Education Week, Spanish ambassador to speak
International Education Week 2014 is Nov. 18-22. This joint initiative of the U.S. Department of State and the U.S. Department of Education is an opportunity to highlight the University’s commitment to global and international understanding through programming, lectures, presentations and more.
Encore of ‘Becoming Social Security Savvy’ scheduled
The Continuing Education Office and PORTAL are offering an encore of “Becoming Social Security Savvy” at noon, Tuesday, Nov. 18, in PORTAL Building, Room 242.
MSW program ranked most affordable in the nation
UNC Charlotte’s Master of Social Work degree is the most affordable program in the nation, according to the website Social Work Degree Guide.
To select its list, the website looked at a number of resources, including the average in-state graduate tuition listed on the National Center for Education Statistics’ College Navigator. The guide noted that for the top 100 graduate social work degrees, the average in-state tuition in 2014 was $15,416. It listed UNC Charlotte’s MSW tuition at $4,008.
Brown Bag Series to focus on ‘Five Biggest Trends Shaping Your Future’
The UNC Charlotte Continuing Education Office’s ongoing Brown Bag Series will feature a talk by Jason Mink at noon, Wednesday, Dec. 3, at UNC Charlotte Center City.
UNC Charlotte Dance Department to present Fall Concert
The UNC Charlotte Department of Dance will feature student ensembles in an exciting program of diverse dance styles for its Fall Concert at 7:30 p.m., Thursday, Nov. 20, through Saturday, Nov. 22, in the Robinson Hall for the Performing Arts, Belk Theater. A 2 p.m. matinee will be on Sunday, Nov. 23.
Atkins Library location for Faculty/Staff Social
Faculty and staff members are invited to join colleagues for socializing and networking at a Faculty and Staff Social, which will be from 4:30 to 6:30 p.m., Wednesday, Nov. 19, in the Dale Halton Reading Room of the J. Murrey Atkins Library.
Sponsored by Chancellor Philip L. Dubois, the social will feature light hors d’oeuvres, wine, beer and soft drinks.
University to celebrate National Distance Learning Week
National Distance Learning Week is Nov. 10-14, and UNC Charlotte’s Extended Academic Programs Office is providing a one-stop resource for faculty to engage in dozens of free development opportunities sponsored by the U.S. Distance Learning Association. For students, they can attend a live “Google hangout” at noon, Thursday, Nov. 13, to share their insights on how to succeed as an online learner.
Africana studies professor to participate in arts symposium
Akin Ogundiran, chair of the Department of Africana Studies, will be a presenter for “The Arts in Global Africa” being held at the Mint Museum Randolph on Saturday, Nov. 15.
This symposium, from 10 a.m. to 5:30 p.m., will feature talks by leading scholars in African art. In addition to Ogundiran, presenters will be Herbert Cole, professor emeritus, University of California at Santa Barbara; Henry Drewal from the University of Wisconsin-Madison; Cecile Fromont, University of Chicago; and Victoria Rovine of UNC-Chapel Hill.
