UNC Charlotte to return to normal operating status at noon, officials continue to monitor conditions
UNC Charlotte will return to normal operating status at noon on Wednesday, Feb. 18 (OS1). Classes will resume and office and operations will be open.
Texas researcher to talk about electronic health records
Hua Xu, the Robert Graham Associate Professor at the School of Biomedical Informatics in the University of Texas Health Science Center at Houston, will present “Natural Language Processing: Methods and Applications in the Medical Domain” at 4 p.m., Wednesday, Feb. 25, in Fretwell Building, Room 126.
Career Center to hold annual Education Career Fair
UNC Charlotte students and alumni, as well as community members, are invited to the Education Career Fair, which will be from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m., Friday, Feb. 27, in the Barnhardt Student Activity Center.
‘Umbra’ on display in Student Union Art Gallery
The Student Union Art Gallery will display “Umbra,” an on-site installation by Meredith Connelly through Sunday, March 8. A free reception with the artist will be at 4:30 p.m., Thursday, Feb. 19; it will feature a performance by opera singer Kelly Hutchinson.
“Umbra” explores the pairing of light and sculpture with sound sensitivity. Though each sculpture is created specifically for the site, “Umbra” is a continuing series. The exhibit was first displayed at the Cornelius Arts Center last summer.
Step Afrika! to bring high-energy rhythm and dance performance to campus
Contemporary dance company Step Afrika! will perform at 7 p.m., Monday, Feb. 23, in the Student Union, Room 340 D-I. The event, sponsored by the Campus Activities Board (CAB), is free and open to the public.
Founded in 1994, the dance company is the first professional ensemble dedicated to the tradition of stepping. It now ranks as one of the top 10 African American dance companies in the United States.
First Ward Park construction continues
Work continues on the four-acre First Ward Park, a joint public-private venture. With its location between ImaginOn and UNC Charlotte Center City, the park will provide the University with arts and cultural programming opportunities.
Half-day Career and Academic Advising Seminar scheduled
The Office of Academic Services, in collaboration with the Advising Redesign Team, will hold a half-day seminar for career and undergraduate academic advisors from 9 a.m. to noon, Friday, Feb. 20, in the Barnhardt Student Activity Center, Salons A and B.
Translation symposium set for UNC Charlotte Center City
The Department of Languages and Culture Studies will host the interdisciplinary symposium “Translations Versus Globalization” on Friday and Saturday, Feb. 20-21, at UNC Charlotte Center City.
The symposium will celebrate 20-plus years of international and intellectual exchange between UNC Charlotte and the Université de Limoges, and it will feature 30 speakers from China, France, Spain and the United States focusing on translation issues in 10 languages.

Theatre Department to present ‘The Purple Flower & Other Plays’
Guest artists Khalid Hill and Ricardo Foster Jr. will take the stage along with student and alumni actors for “The Purple Flower & Other Plays,” an innovative production of African-American short plays. Performances will be at 7:30 p.m., Wednesday through Saturday, Feb. 18-21, and 2 p.m., Sunday, Feb. 22, in Robinson Hall’s Belk Theater.
Although awarded best new play by Crisis magazine in 1927, Marita Bonner’s Harlem Renaissance masterpiece “The Purple Flower” rarely has been seen on stage and was never performed during her lifetime.
