Updated COSO internal control framework has implications for entire University
Recently, the Committee of Sponsoring Organizations of the Treadway Commission (COSO) updated its internal control standards, which form the backbone of internal control frameworks in organizations worldwide. North Carolina has adopted the COSO standards across all government agencies and universities, which has implications for all UNC Charlotte employees.
Construction projects to enhance campus traffic flow
The University is planning a number of infrastructure projects that will provide long-term benefits for vehicular and pedestrian flow. Several construction initiatives will begin in the coming weeks and months and will add or enhance roadways, sidewalks, bike lanes and ADA access.
Some project timelines will overlap causing traffic congestion in different areas; however, the ultimate goal is to make the campus more fluid for vehicles and pedestrians. The University is overseeing these projects carefully, with a targeted ending date for all projects by August 2015.
Feb. 12 ‘Live Wire’ to highlight upcoming theatre production
James Vesce, chair of the Department of Theatre, and theatre student Dylaney Edinger are the guests on the Feb. 12 edition of “The Live Wire,” Inside UNC Charlotte’s streaming webcast.
‘Living Thinkers’ screening, panel discussion scheduled for Feb. 12
A documentary screening and panel discussion of “Living Thinkers: An Autobiography of Black Women in the Ivory Tower” will be at 6:30 p.m., Thursday, Feb. 12, in the College of Health and Human Services, Room 128.
Kristen Reynolds, a master’s student in English literature and a Graduate Life Fellow of the Center for Graduate Life, will host the event.
University to host ‘RoboResearch’ seminar
The North Carolina Council of IEEE and the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering are sponsoring the one-day event “RoboResearch” on Friday, March 6, on the Charlotte Research Institute campus.
This seminar will bring together leading experts in government, research and industry to advance the development of robotics in the state.
Sabol to discuss Russia as part of 2015 Great Decisions series
Steve Sabol, associate professor of history, will discuss Russia and the near abroad as the sixth speaker in the 2015 Great Decisions lecture series. This final presentation in the 2015 series will be at 6:30 p.m., Wednesday, Feb. 18, at UNC Charlotte Center City.
Leadership summit on African American males set for Feb. 13
“Educating Our Black Youth: A Community Responsibility” is the theme of a leadership summit scheduled for Friday, Feb. 13, in the Cone University Center, McKnight Hall.
The Africana Studies Department and the Urban Education Collaborative, in partnership with the N.C. National Alliance of Black School Educators is conducting this event, which is free for UNC Charlotte faculty, staff and students. $2 million launches Siemens Energy Large Manufacturing Solutions Laboratory
With the support of local industry that will benefit from its research capabilities, UNC Charlotte dedicated its new Siemens Energy Large Manufacturing Solutions Laboratory Feb. 9.
Winter walk, presentation on dwarf conifers set for Feb. 15
The staff of the Botanical Gardens will conduct an informative stroll through the Susie Harwood Garden from 1 to 3 p.m., Sunday, Feb. 15.
As part of the event, Bruce Appeldoorn, owner of Appeldoorn Landscape Nursery, will give two presentations on dwarf conifers and offer a selection of hard-to-find dwarf conifers for sale. The Charlotte Camellia Society also will be on-site with a selection of winter-blooming Camellias for sale, including some favorites that individuals will see in the garden during the winter walk.
Orchid growing ‘lunch and learn’ scheduled
John Denti, orchid curator at the McMillan Greenhouse, will present the lunch and learn “Orchid Growing 101” at 12:15 p.m., Wednesday, Feb. 11, at McMillan Greenhouse.
Denti will demystify the care of these tropical plants by “breaking it down” to the most important factors for growing healthy orchids.
