When a group of about a dozen UNC Charlotte students departed Charlotte for Malawi, Africa, earlier this semester, they didn’t leave with lofty visions of “saving” Africa.
The fifth annual UNC Charlotte Film Festival will be held from 5 to 10 p.m., Saturday, April 27, in the Cone University Center.
This free event, sponsored by the UNC Charlotte Film Club, will begin with a live reading of the three winners from a screenwriting competition at 5 p.m. in the After Hours Lounge. Screenings of various short films will begin at 7 p.m. in McKnight Hall.

A group of 20 UNC Charlotte students and several staff members displayed the Giving Green spirit in Alabama and Ohio as part of the Habitat for Humanity Collegiate Challenge.
Designed to encourage college campuses to visit and work with Habitat affiliates across the country, the challenge is typically an alternative spring break experience for most participants.
The Human Resources Department will hold a retirement reception in honor of Barbara Greene from 2 to 4 p.m., Wednesday, May 8, in the Cone University Center, Room 112.
Greene, executive assistant, employee recognition coordinator and dual career couples program coordinator, is retiring June 1 after more than 23 years of service to the University.

Seven-acre Van Landingham Glen is one of the largest public rhododendron gardens in the Southeastern United States, and it showcases native plants from around the Carolinas, too. Prominent Charlotte stockbroker and philanthropist Ralph Van Landingham provided the financial support for the glen, which was dedicated in his honor on Sunday, April 27, 1966.
More than 50 interactive, hands-on activities and displays will be featured during the UNC Charlotte Science and Technology Expo, set for 10 a.m. to 2 p.m., Sunday, April 21, on the plaza near the Student Union.

Nineteen finalists for the Charlotte Venture Challenge (CVC) have been selected from among 95 entries, and one start-up company will receive the $25,000 grand prize as the winner of the 12th annual event on Wednesday, May 1. Category winners will share $50,000 in prize awards funded by the Hauser Family Fund.
