Presidential conventions happen once every four years College and university students from across the country will travel to Charlotte to participate in the Washington Center’s Democratic National Convention Academic Seminar from Aug. 25 to Sept. 7.

UNC Charlotte will enroll the largest freshmen class in its history this fall. For the upcoming 2012-13 academic year, some 631 more students accepted admission offers than the University had initially expected.

The English Language Training Institute (ELTI) will conduct language testing for incoming teaching assistants whose first language is not English. Testing will be at 1:30 PM, Friday, Aug. 17, in the College of Health and Human Services, Room 281.

The Wellness Promotion Department of the Student Health Center recently received a $45,000 grant from the Mecklenburg County Alcoholic Beverage Control (ABC) Board.

Effective Tuesday, Aug. 21, Jeanette Sims will be director of community affairs in the Division of University Advancement. Her primary responsibility will be to direct programs and initiatives in support of UNC Charlotte’s mission as it strives to address the cultural, economic, educational, environmental, health and social needs of the greater Charlotte region. 

The Office of Housing and Residence Life is undergoing a construction and renovation boom due to its $450 million master plan. One of those helping to lead this transformational effort is Jackie Simpson. As associate vice chancellor and director of housing and residence life, Simpson is responsible for all facets of an operation with an annual budget of $28 million.

Bioinformatics professor Anthony Fodor is among the authors of recent research papers that portend a huge breakthrough for personalized health care. The news was announced last week, and it is receiving international attention.

The UNC Charlotte Center City Projective Eye Gallery will launch an inaugural “summer experiment,” which will feature a performance installation that brings together dance, song, sculpture and design.

The German Language and Culture Foundation recently awarded $44,000 in scholarships to support study abroad in Germany during this summer and the 2012-13 academic year.
