Joyce Dalsheim, an assistant professor in the Department of Global, International and Area Studies, is the first recipient of the J. Murrey Atkins Library Faculty Engagement Award.

She will be honored at a reception on Thursday, Sept. 17, in the library’s Halton Reading Room; the event starts at 3:30 p.m.

UNC Charlotte researcher Jürgen Buchenau explores the causes, dynamics, consequences and legacies of the Mexican Revolution in the work “Mexico’s Once and Future Revolution: Social Upheaval and the Challenge of Rule since the Late Nineteenth Century.”

 His most provocative conclusion is that the Mexican Revolution fundamentally reshaped global debates about human rights, in that the revolutionaries posited the existence of a series of social rights including the right to work, housing, food, medical care and education.

Charlotte Pride honors outstanding individuals each year with the “Champions of Pride Awards” in recognition of their demonstrated exemplary work and dedication to the LGBTQ community. This year, Josh Burford, assistant director for sexual and gender diversity in the Multicultural Resource Center, was honored with the Charlotte Pride “Harvey Milk Award.”

A one-time freelance writer, Denelle Eads still relies upon her communications background as the outreach and staff development librarian for the J. Murrey Atkins Library.

“I work with colleagues to promote professional development opportunities and coordinate outreach activities to enable us all in the library to get to know each other,” said Eads. “Currently, we have about 85 faculty and staff members in Atkins, and I interact with everyone.”

Through a grant from the Andrew W. Mellon Foundation, the UNC Charlotte J. Murrey Atkins Library will investigate how best to license and acquire electronic resources for academic libraries. The $271,000 award is a two-year research and planning grant to produce recommendations for the licensing and acquisition of electronic resources, particularly eBooks. 

Dee Dixon, a successful Charlotte entrepreneur, will present “Her Story, Her Journey” at 2 p.m., Thursday, Feb. 26, in the Halton Reading Room of the J. Murrey Atkins Library in celebration of Black History Month.

The Charlotte-based LGBT arts, entertainment and news publication qnotes recently named Josh Burford, assistant director for sexual and gender diversity in the Multicultural Resource Center, as its “2014 Person of the Year.”

The recognition stemmed from Burford’s extensive campus and community involvement, and in particular, his outreach initiatives related to the establishment of a community LGBTQ historical archive in UNC Charlotte’s J. Murray Atkins Library Special Collections.

Retired Col. Mark Mykleby will speak at 3:30 p.m., Thursday, Jan. 22, in the Atkins Library, Halton Reading Room, as part of the seventh annual International Speaker Series.

UNC Charlotte’s J. Murrey Atkins Library has acquired the “Bryant McMurray Motorsports Photograph Collection,” which documents the world of stock car racing through images captured over six decades by the award-winning motorsports photographer.

What began as small stock car races between rival bootleg moonshine runners has grown into a multibillion dollar industry. Today, North Carolina remains a leader in the racing world; the city of Charlotte is within 50 miles of 90 percent of the racing teams in the United States.
