Eight students who represent a number of educational disciplines are this year’s recipients of the Thomas L. Reynolds Graduate Student Research Award.

The Reynolds Fellowship was created by its namesake, Associate Provost and Graduate School Dean Tom Reynolds, to assist with costs that are overlooked in other funding sources and to help students stay focused on their research goals. The Reynolds Fellowship provides up to $1,500 to doctoral students who have completed three semesters and to master’s students who have completed at least one semester.

The results are in, and UNC Charlotte’s 49er Rocketry Team achieved major success at this year’s NASA Student Launch Competition.

UNC Charlotte’s Levine Scholars Program has selected the 20 young leaders from across the United States who will be the members of the 10th class of this prestigious, academically competitive scholarship program. The scholars will join the University beginning with the fall 2019 semester.

Cato College of Education professor Chuang Wang and student Maria Garcia are the recipients of the International Education Awards (IEA) presented by the Office of International Programs.

James Cook, a professor in the Department of Psychological Science at UNC Charlotte, has received the 2019 Outstanding Educator Award, a top honor given by the Society for Community Research and Action (SCRA), Division 27 of the American Psychological Association.

A team of Construction Management and Civil Engineering Technology students from UNC Charlotte placed first in the 2019 ACI/ASCC Concrete Construction Competition, an international contest sponsored by the American Concrete Institute (ACI) and the American Society of Concrete Contractors (ASCC).

Team members were Ross Newsome, Benjamin Hager, George Poulos, Kenny Wang and Joseph Ocampo. Assistant Professor Tara Cavalline was the team’s mentor.

The Cato College of Education has joined the American Association of Colleges for Teacher Education (AACTE) Holmes Scholars Program and selected two doctoral students, Deondra Gladney and Stephanie Jones-Fosu, as UNC Charlotte’s first recipients.

Historically, graduating students have been welcomed into the nursing profession with a pinning, said Peggy MacKay, a lecturer in the UNC Charlotte School of Nursing. But faculty in the school wanted to do a little more for the graduates to formally usher them into the field.

The result was a White Coat Ceremony. Each semester, graduates receive a white coat to symbolize their embarking upon their careers as nurses. MacKay said faculty members write notes of encouragement to place in the pockets of each jacket.

Treven Stoddard, a senior computer science major, recently received the Blue Diamond Student Innovator Award for developing an application to assist algebra and calculus students.

Harris Teeter recently made a donation to the Jamil Niner Student Pantry. A gift of $10,000 in Harris Teeter gift cards and industrial shelving to update the pantry’s storage needs will assist the organization’s efforts to combat student food insecurity on UNC Charlotte’s campus.
