Faculty & Friends series to open with Nina Simone tribute
The Department of Music’s Faculty & Friends Concert Series will open Tuesday, Aug.28, with “Revolution & Revival,” a tribute to Nina Simone. This event, which will feature performances by A Sign of the Times jazz band and the Madison Park String Quartet, is scheduled for 7:30 p.m. in the Rowe Recital Hall.
University Recreation said ‘Put your name on it’
During the Day of Convocation, UNC Charlotte students had an opportunity to autograph a white steel beam that will be part of the University Recreation Center, currently under construction adjacent to the Popp Martin Student Union.

Pace, Thomas collect more accolades for Charlotte 49ers
Recent Charlotte graduates Haley Pace and Martha Thomas, remarkable student-athletes for the 49ers’ softball and women’s soccer teams, respectively, have been named Conference USA Scholar Athlete Award winners for their sports. Pace is a repeat honoree.
The C-USA Scholar Athlete of the Year Awards are presented to the top student-athletes in each conference-sponsored sport, determined by a vote of the league’s 14 faculty athletic representatives. The award is based on academic achievement (GPA), athletic achievement and service.
Weird Recycling Center rolls out
The Weird Recycling Center, located on the first floor of Popp Martin Student Union, provides the campus community an opportunity to recycle unique items.
Funded by the Charlotte Green Initiative, the Weird Recycling Center accepts items such as plastic bags (which must be clean, dry and empty) and unwanted cords, cables, batteries and ink cartridges. The center also provides an opportunity for student organizations to host donation collections for other unique items.

Learn about fall vegetable gardening
The UNC Charlotte Botanical Gardens is offering a course on fall vegetable gardening at 10 a.m., Thursday, Aug. 30, in the McMillan Greenhouse.
Don Boekelheide will lead this two-hour workshop in which attendees will learn the best varieties of fall vegetables to plant for Carolina Piedmont conditions. Participants will learn about soil care techniques to keep fall crops strong and to keep diseases under control.
