Architecture alumni to be named AIA Fellows
Melissa Farling and Alan McGuinn, alumni of the UNC Charlotte School of Architecture, will be named Fellows of the American Institute of Architects (AIA) at the organization’s national convention being held June 26-28 in Chicago. This AIA honor is bestowed upon architects who have made a significant contribution to architecture and society on a national level and who have achieved an exemplary standard of excellence in the profession.
EH&S Office offers tips to ‘beat the heat’
Summer is under way, and the Office of Environmental Health & Safety reminds employees to be aware of heat-related illness.
According to officials, extremely hot weather can cause serious health effects, such as heat exhaustion and heat stroke, which may lead to death. People who work outdoors in extreme heat are more likely to become dehydrated and are at increased risk to suffer heat-related illness.

CCI teams to compete in regional hackathon
Four student teams, comprised of a total of 10 to 12 individuals from the College of Computing and Informatics, will participate in a regional hackathon set for Saturday and Sunday, July 12-13, in the PORTAL Building.
UNC BOG recognizes Medal of Honor alumnus
The University of North Carolina Board of Governors recently recognized Kyle White (’13) on his being awarded the Medal of Honor.
During the BOG’s regular monthly meeting, White was presented a special commendation from the board. UNC Charlotte Chancellor Philip L. Dubois gave White a 49ers football signed by head coach Brad Lambert.
According to White, his goal as a Medal of Honor recipient is to work with returning service members to inform them of their educational opportunities through the GI bill.
Staff Council elections under way
UNC Charlotte staff members can vote for Staff Council executive board positions (chair, vice chair, secretary and communications officer) through 5 p.m., Friday, June 27. The election process is online.
Nominees are Jim Kay for chair; Ron Greer and Penny Stevens for vice chair; Shannon Homesley for secretary; and Jessica Barton, Lyndee Champion-Ivey and Dave Frantzreb for communications officer. More information on the nominees is on the Staff Council website.
Explore the great outdoors through Venture trips
Whether looking for a walk in the woods or some fun on a lake, UNC Charlotte’s Venture outdoor education program has the right summer trip. Led by experienced outdoor facilitators, Venture trips are open to UNC Charlotte students, faculty, staff and the general public.
All trips require a mandatory pre-trip meeting to review the itinerary, safety precautions and for participants to meet their companions. Typically, all equipment and transportation are provided by Venture.

CRI, South Village decks recognized for design excellence
The International Parking Association has given 2014 Awards of Merit to the University’s CRI Deck I and the South Village Deck.
For its competition, the association fielded entries from Australia, Canada, Europe, South America and the United States.
Community foundation awards grant for KEEPING WATCH
The Charlotte Mecklenburg Community Foundation (CMCF) has awarded the UNC Charlotte College of Arts + Architecture a $10,000 grant for the KEEPING WATCH initiative, a three-year project led in partnership with the UNC Charlotte Urban Institute.
Working with historians, writers, artists, scientists and environmental experts, KEEPING WATCH is exploring three local environmental issues: plastic waste and recycling (KEEPING WATCH on PLASTICS, 2014), urban streams (KEEPING WATCH on CREEKS, 2015), and air quality and the value of trees (KEEPING WATCH on AIR, 2016).
Faces – Brenda Shue
Brenda Shue, a member of the Chancellor’s Office, is passionate about learning and the University.
At December commencement, where she graduated with a Master of Arts in Liberal Studies and a graduate certificate in technical and professional writing, Shue was chosen to ring the bell during the afternoon ceremony for her exemplary 49er spirit.
